DHL Western Province scored three tries to one which was too good for the Vodacom Blue Bulls on Saturday.
The first half gave supporters much to cheer about but the second half was just too many mistakes and penalties. At the end it was a 20-5 win for Province.
The Blue Bulls started like a house on fire with Specman getting a break from deep and it almost ended up in the first try with Province scrabbling in defence.
Province forced their way back into the Blue Bulls half of the field as we were shown early on that this is going to be a tight one.
Province were camping in the Blue Bulls twenty two and a loss ball gave Papier a clear field to run all the way to score the first try of the match.
Province got to the Blue Bulls twenty two and had opportunities but just could not get pass the Blue Bulls defence.
Senatla then got his chance to sprint down the line but just had a foot on the line before he got over the line.
WP finally got over the line when Nel got the ball and stretch over for their first try and even the scoreboard up at 5-all.
It was great attacking play from both sides who asked plenty of questions on defence.
The Blue Bulls was really struggling in the scrums as almost every scrum resulted in a penalty for Province.
Although both sides had the chances to score the teams went into the break at 5-all.
Although the Blue Bulls had the better start to the second half it was Province who scored after a poor lineout from the Bulls resulted in Augustus getting over the line after the backs did the break.
This gave Western Province a 12-5 lead after 49 minutes.
The game lost a bit of it’s spark with mistakes creeping into the game from both sides.
SP Marais got a penalty kick over from the halfway line to extend Province lead to 15-5 with 15 minutes to go.
There was a final try in still for Province as Barry got a cross kick from Marais to end the game.
Not a great second half but Province will take the win as they finish the first round of matches.
