The Lions have named their team for the DHL pre-season warm up. John Mitchell has named his strongest possible squad for the warm up against the Stormers, but has enlarged it to 26. Of the starting XV only newcomer from the Griquas, and off season lock signing Hendrik Roodt, does not have super rugby experience. Elton Jantjes was not considered because of his injury rehabilitation. Similarly Bok prop CJ Van Der Linde is still a few weeks away from readiness. The team is: 15. Jaco Taute 14. Deon Van Rensburg 13. Lionel Mapoe 12. Doppies La Grange 11. Michael Killian 10. Butch James 9. Michael Bondesio 8. Warren Whiteley 7. Josh Strauss (C) 6. Derrick Minnie 5. Franco Van Der Merwe 4.
A world club championship is on the cards after the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Premiership chief executive Mark McCafferty has claimed. Rob Wildman – DailymailUK But the plan, which would match the best of Europe against the top teams from the southern hemisphere, faces a number of hurdles. McCafferty explained: ‘It won’t happen before the World Cup but it might happen after 2015. It is a matter of the stars coming into alignment to make something possible. ‘The national championship is something to treasure and Europe is very successful. Ideally, we would like to bolt on top of that an international club event, something that answers the question, “Who is top dog?” Globetrotting: McCafferty thinks the Premiership champions could be playing in a world club championship in five years ‘Is it the Crusaders? Is it the Bulls? Is it Toulouse, Leinster or Saracens? That would be such a compelling event that sooner or later it will have to happen. ‘Season structure is the biggest issue. We have had plenty of indications from our partners and from a TV point of view it would work

The new 4Nations competition begins on August 18 with the Wallabies playing the All Blacks in Sydney and South Africa taking on Argentina in Cape Town. 3News.co.nz The Argentina Rugby Union (UAR) is taking all three of its matches in the new four-nations series to venues outside Buenos Aires. Argentina open the championship against South Africa in Mendoza on August 25, then meet New Zealand in La Plata on September 29 and Australia in Rosario on October 6. Sanzar chief executive Greg Peters last month strongly recommended the UAR hold two matches in Buenos Aires and one outside. La Plata is 65km south of Buenos Aires. Peters said his recommendation was based on logistical concerns visiting teams face once in Argentina, as well as the long journey to get there. UAR president Luis Catillo said the decision was made to take the Pumas’ games into the country’s interior “so everyone can enjoy our national team”, Reuters reported. The Estadio Ciudad was recently converted into a 36,000 all-seater venue with a roof to cover all the seats. The Rugby Championship replaces the Tri-Nations after Argentina were invited to compete against the superpowers of rugby in the southern hemisphere. The UAR revealed [...]

The Sevens Bokke managed to let Australia bring in a late try to steal the PLATE cup as France and England fought it out for the main prize of the Cup. Bas news in Dubai as the Bokke failed to reach the finals as the Frogs spanked them out of the semis of the Cup Final and the Bokke managed to reach the Plate final. Unfortunately the Bokke squandered a less than five point lead to see the Aussies score and convert after the hooter for a 17-14 win… Luckily the only sides ahead of the Bokke on the points table of the Sevens Circus, Fiji and New Zealand had a similarly nightmarish tournament… The Bokke are still joint second with New Zealand on 29 points while the Fijians are on 39… Coach Paul Treu was disappointed about the outcomes after the Bokke gave New Zealand a handsome klap on Friday to win their group saying: “It was disappointing for us that we did not play to our full potential. We gained some valuable points which allowed us to stay in touch with the front group on the log and we will now regroup and focus our efforts on doing [...]

The Heineken Cup rugby match between Saracens and Biarritz has apparently been cancelled, according to reports. Accoring to Eyewitness News reporter, Jean Smyth, the game – scheduled to be played in Cape Town on 14 January – has been cancelled. “BREAKING NEWS: Saracens v Biarritz in Cape Town has been cancelled,” Smyth posted on Twitter. It is believed the conflict between the Cape Town City Council and the Western Province Rugby has prompted the cancellation of the game. The European Cup pool game was initially due to be played at the Cape Town Stadium. However, the Western Province Rugby Union was unhappy with the decision and earlier this week announced it would attempt to move the game to Newlands. “After a recent meeting by the Western Province Rugby Football Union Executive Committee, the request by Saracens to host the match at Cape Town Stadium was considered. However, the Executive Committee decided that the home of rugby, Newlands, would stage this historic match,” the WPRFU commented earlier in the week. Saracens released the following statement on their website: Now that all discussions between various stakeholders have been concluded, Saracens has decided the Heineken Cup match against Biarritz on Saturday January 14th will [...]

The Cape Town Stadium is expected to be announced as the venue for the Heineken Cup clash between Saracens and Biarritz. Sport24 Saracens announced last month they will play a home pool stage clash against Biarritz in Cape Town on January 14, but did not reveal which ground the match will be played at. However, according to Die Burger it is a foregone conclusion that the game will be played at the Cape Town Stadium and not Newlands Rugby Stadium. The announcement will be made on Thursday. Recently retired Bok captain John Smit joined Saracens after the World Cup in New Zealand and could be in action alongside several other Springboks currently plying their trade with the English club. It will be the first time that a Heineken Cup game will be hosted outside of Europe. Saracens’ CEO, Edward Griffiths, said the club is proud to be associated with so many South Africans. “Saracens is a club with a strong South African flavour due to Johann Rupert’s (South African businessman) shares in the club and the 12 South African players here,” said Griffiths, himself a South African. “It makes sense for us to grow our support and commercial interests in [...]

The Lions added another scalp to their pre-season collection, as the Johannesburg-based franchise ran rampant to beat Tucumán 82-19 on Wednesday. Having mauled the Sharks last week, John Mitchell’s pride again showed their Super Rugby teeth in a match that looked like no more than a training run. Three tries and a 19-3 lead after only 13 minutes set the tone for the match in Johannesburg, as the Argentine tourists looked a pale shadow of the team that won their country’s national provincial title. With a number of their key players currently with the Pampas XV – an Argentinian selection that plays in the Vodacom Cup against the South African provinces – they were simply no match for the eager Lions outfit. The Lions led 47-9 at half-time with seven tries to their credit, and ended up scoring 12 tries against one. It was only in the scrums that the visitors were – initially – really competitive, although some poor line-outs by the Lions and also a few unnecessary turnovers helped the visitors to keep it from being an even bigger trashing. Such sloppiness will undoubtedly be punished when the Super Rugby series starts in just over a week, but [...]
