LONDON: The All Blacks’ World Cup-winning coach Graham Henry has described England as “world champions at wasting talent” and as playing a game based on fear. January 30, 2012 – 12:36PM Fullback Ben Foden may not reach his full potential under England’s system, says Graham Henry. Photo: Peter Meecham Henry guided New Zealand to victory last October in stark contrast to England who endured a miserable World Cup, crashing out in the quarter-finals with their campaign marred by a number of off-field incidents. Henry believes England have good attacking players but questions whether they can ever fulfil their potential as long as they persist with their present approach. Advertisement: Story continues below He told therugbysite.com that England has top-drawer attacking players but they are seldom used. “It sometimes seem that England are world champions at wasting talent. “At national level and at club level English teams are far too worried about securing possession. “No wonder England had trouble scoring tries against the better teams at the World Cup.” He singled out Ben Foden, Chris Ashton and Delon Armitage as players who have impressed him but believes they may never reach their potential. “A country with over a million players should be [...]

The Griqualand-West Rugby Union will this year host an international rugby team for the first time in 12 years. Sport24 The Volksblad newspaper was reliably informed that Kimberley will host one of the midweek matches when England tour South Africa in June for three Test matches. A Barbarians team will play against England at GWK-Park. The Barbarians will apparently consist of players from South Africa’s so-called eight smaller unions. The South African Rugby Union (SARU) will decide at its general meeting in Cape Town on Friday which union will host the other midweek game for the England tour. England last visited Kimberley in 2000 when they played a midweek game against Griquas. England comfortably won that encounter 55-16.

Springbok assistant coach Gary Gold has been appointed director of rugby for the rest of the season at English Premiership club Newcastle Falcons. Rob Houwing, Sport24 The announcement was made on Thursday, after incumbent Alan Tait opted to take a break from rugby. Gold has been a key sidekick of Peter de Villiers – almost certainly the outgoing Bok senior coach – during his tenure, heading up the forwards’ duty. The Bok pack generally performed well at the recent World Cup in New Zealand, although the Boks were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by Australia. Whether the move to currently battling Newcastle affects his future on our shores remains to be seen, although much will probably depend on who succeeds De Villiers as national coach. Gold has prior experience of English rugby as head coach of London Irish several years ago; it is where he also cut his coaching teeth some 11 years ago. He has since also been technical director at the Stormers. The website www.Rugbyweek.com quoted Gold as saying: “This is an exciting challenge and I am delighted to have the opportunity to work in the Aviva Premiership. “Newcastle Falcons is a big club with big ambitions [...]

The FNB Maties celebrated the opening of the new Stellenbosch Academy of Sport with a 28-26 win over the Saracens Storm on Wednesday. Eight tries were scored in sweltering conditions at Paul Roos, with the entire Saracens first team squad looking on from the stands – including the likes of former Springbok captain John Smit, ex-England skipper Steve Borthwick and new England squad members Mouritz Botha, Brad Barritt and Owen Farrell (to name just a few). There were also some big names in the Saracens Storm side – the likes of Islanders Kameli Ratuvou (centre) and Michael Tagicakibau (wing) and evergreen back five forward Hugh Vyvyan – whilst a few Stellenbosch students made up the numbers for the visitors. Two of the Storm’s ‘loan’ players, flanker Nicholas de Jager and centre Mark Hodgkiss, scored for the visitors, but replacement back Donald Stevens missed a late conversion which would have meant a 28-28 draw. In the end, however, the Maties edged their more illustrious opponents by two points, with Grant Hattingh, Wessel Coetzee, Tertius Daniller (pictured) and Os Hamman crossing the whitewash for the Men in Maroon. New recruit, former UJ flyhalf André Smith, converted all four tries for the Maties. No.8 [...]

England coach Stuart Lancaster picked nine uncapped players on Wednesday including Owen Farrell in a rejuvenated 32-man squad for rugby’s Six Nations. With Jonny Wilkinson among those to have retired from international rugby since England’s poor World Cup campaign, Lancaster drafted in the young Saracens flyhalf in a group showing 15 changes to the last elite squad picked in August. Lancaster also called up South Africa’s Brad Barritt, Lee Dickson, Calum Clark, Ben Morgan, Jordan Turner-Hall, Phil Dowson, Joe Marler and Rob Webber in an inexperienced squad. Former Sharks centre Barritt played for the Durban-based team from 2006-2008 before joining the current English champions. The RFU announced the squad with the 20-year-old Farrell referred to as a center, hinting that he could start England’s February 4 opener at Scotland in midfield because of a lack of options in the position. Manu Tuilagi is in the squad but injured, former captain Mike Tindall has been dropped and Shontayne Hape was also omitted. With first-choice No 10 Toby Flood injured, Charlie Hodgson has been recalled and could be in line for his first appearance since the World Cup warmups against Wales. Lancaster is yet to pick a captain. Fullback Delon Armitage, one [...]

A world club championship is on the cards after the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Premiership chief executive Mark McCafferty has claimed. Rob Wildman – DailymailUK But the plan, which would match the best of Europe against the top teams from the southern hemisphere, faces a number of hurdles. McCafferty explained: ‘It won’t happen before the World Cup but it might happen after 2015. It is a matter of the stars coming into alignment to make something possible. ‘The national championship is something to treasure and Europe is very successful. Ideally, we would like to bolt on top of that an international club event, something that answers the question, “Who is top dog?” Globetrotting: McCafferty thinks the Premiership champions could be playing in a world club championship in five years ‘Is it the Crusaders? Is it the Bulls? Is it Toulouse, Leinster or Saracens? That would be such a compelling event that sooner or later it will have to happen. ‘Season structure is the biggest issue. We have had plenty of indications from our partners and from a TV point of view it would work

Some top club owners in England have been talking with their French counterparts about shifting the rugby union season in the north to the summer months. Rugby Fan, The Roar It isn’t clear whether a wholesale move is under discussion, or whether they just want to reschedule parts of the calendar. The subject has come up, however, because the clubs are becoming increasingly frustrated at losing their international players for long periods. For instance, during the World Cup, Leicester started their Premiership campaign without the likes of Flood, Croft, Youngs, the Tuilagi brothers, Castrogiovanni, Murphy, Cole, Waldrom, Deacon, Agulla, Ayerza etc. As a consequence, they lost six of their first seven matches and are only now putting together some wins to climb up from the foot of the table. The benefits seem to be obvious. A clear separation of domestic and international fixtures; the opportunity to establish a global season and better playing conditions in the summer months. Nevertheless, there’s a good deal of scepticism about whether any satisfactory deal can or should be struck. Mick Cleary in the Telegraph warns that competition from other sports and activities means that rugby might struggle to attract crowds – already a problem [...]

The IRFU have announced changes that will restrict the number of foreign players allowed in Ulster, Leinster and Munster’s squad that will take effect for the 2013/14 season, but will likely happen sooner as contracts come up for discussion. Pot Bale, The Roar Early signs are that the announcement may set the national union into conflict with the provincial coaches with Messrs McLaughlin, McGahan and Schmidt none too happy at having their squads depleted of foreign stocks that help them compete at European level. The new policy is designed to deliver at least two suitably experienced Irish players in all 15 field positions for national team selection: - One non-Irish eligible (NIE) player only in each of the 15 field positions across the provinces of Leinster, Munster and Ulster e.g. one foreign player allowed across all three teams per position.* - For the 2013/14 season and onwards, for any given position involving a contracted NIE player, a province will not be permitted to renew that NIE player contract or bring in a new NIE player into that same position in its squad. - All future provincial injury replacement players must be eligible for selection for Ireland. - All future provincial [...]

The Brumbies may need a financial bail-out from the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) after losing their major sponsor less than two months before the start of the Super Rugby season. Rugby365 The Canberra outfit’s horror season in 2011, the worst in their history, saw them lose their 15-year sponsorship from Computer Associates and although they were confident that they had found an able replacement in telecommunications and technology giant Huawei that deal seems to have fallen through at the last minute. The two-times Super Rugby champions were hoping to turn things around in 2012 under new coach Jake White, but those aspirations received a blow with the news that their four-year deal with Huawei that was reported to be worth AUS$4 milllion would not materialise. Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan explained that the franchise had thought it was a done deal until the sponsors pulled out right at the last minute, which has left them scrambling for financial support. “It got to the stage of approving jersey designs,” Fagan told the Canberra Times. “We were awaiting the global board’s rubber stamping of the agreement, which I understand was received last week. “There were some unrelated issues that arose that Huawei [...]

Former Australia coach Eddie Jones has been appointed head coach of Japan’s national rugby team. AFP Jones replaces All Blacks legend John Kirwan, the Japan Rugby Football Union said on Monday. Jones, 51, took the Wallabies to the 2003 Rugby World Cup final and was technical adviser to South Africa when the Springboks won the 2007 World Cup in France. His wife is Japanese and he has been managing Japan’s Top League side Suntory Sungoliath since 2009. In the 2010-2011 season, Suntory finished runners-up in the Top League and won the separate national championship under Jones. This season they are currently leading the Top League after eight straight wins. He emerged as Kirwan’s likely successor after Japan came home winless from the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Japan will host the World Cup in 2019 and will be looking to avoid the embarrassment of becoming the first host country to fail to make the knockout stages. Kirwan failed to break the Brave Blossoms’ 20-year World Cup win drought at the New Zealand tournament. He opted not to seek a new contract when his current five-year deal expires at the end of this month.
