Given the frosty reception, literally, the two teams will receive at Twickenham on Saturday, don’t expect anything other than a brutal arm wrestle between England and South Africa. Jan de Koning – Rugby365 The conditions – snow and sleet at various intervals during the day – will ensure any chance of an expansive approach goes out the window well before kick-off. There may well be the occasional dash by a backline player, but this contest will be mainly fought between the two gargantuan packs. England have not been shy to talk up the need for physicality against a South African team with a reputation for a bit of niggle. The English are also not buying into the suggestion that the Boks are vulnerable – following last week’s loss to Scotland, after some sneaky wins against Ireland and Wales. England No.8 Nick Easter suggested that the Boks may well pose a bigger threat than the Wallabies did a fortnight ago and said England must raise the level of their performance against South Africa on Saturday. The Harlequins loose forward, who has been on the losing side against the Boks in the 2007 World Cup Final in Paris and the record 6-42 [...]

As the well-versed idiom goes: ‘Talk is cheap.’ And there has certainly been a lot of talk in the Scotland camp this week as they await the arrival of South Africa. Jan de Koning – Rugby365 It is obvious they are hopeful of bouncing back from last week’s humiliation against New Zealand and the Springboks have been told in no uncertain terms that the Scots are not going to roll over and play dead again. The central theme to their public utterances is: ‘We are a better team and we’re gong to produce a better performance this weekend.’ However, the jury is still out on Scotland. Their bubble was well-and-truly burst by the All Blacks last week. The SANZAR teams – at least New Zealand and South Africa – appear to be in a different league and Scotland’s self-generated hype – following victories over a dismal Ireland and equally sub-standard Argentina earlier this year – has made way for a more realistic outlook. Scotland attack coach Gregor Townsend admitted that Saturday will be another “huge” test for his team. “They are the No.2 team in the world and World Cup champions,” he said in an interview on the official Scottish [...]

Coach Peter de Villiers on Tuesday made three changes to the Springbok starting XV and one positional switch for Saturday’s Test against Scotland at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. Zane Kirchner, Francois Hougaard and Ryan Kankowski were all promoted to the starting line up while Gio Aplon moves from fullback to wing from the team that defeated Wales 29-25 in Cardiff on Saturday. In addition hooker Adriaan Strauss and wing Lwazi Mvovo are involved in a match-day 22 for the first time on tour as they were drafted onto the bench. Bjorn Basson’s injury and subsequent suspension made him unavailable for the right wing position and his place is taken by Gio Aplon, who moves from fullback. Aplon’s No 15 jersey is taken by Zane Kirchner who moves up from the bench. Francois Hougaard is given the starting position at scrumhalf after his cameo performance from the bench on Saturday, while Ryan Kankowski comes straight into the starting XV at eighthman. “We’ve got a talented squad and a long tour like this gives us an opportunity to try out a few options,” said Peter de Villiers. “Francois Hougaard played well for us in the Vodacom Tri-Nations and did well when he came [...]

Sharks back row forward Willem Alberts was confirmed as the replacement loose forward in the Springbok team to meet Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday. SA Rugby Alberts passed a fitness test on Thursday to take the place he had been slated to have in the No 19 jersey for Saturday’s Test against Ireland. Alberts has recovered from a calf strain sustained in the Absa Currie Cup final and replaces Sharks team-mate Keegan Daniel who made his debut from the bench in the 23-21 victory at the Aviva Stadium. “Willem has had an outstanding season for The Sharks as one of the most effective ball carriers in the South African game,” said Peter de Villiers, Springbok coach. “He has been nursing the injury since our preliminary training camp before the Absa Currie Cup final and has spent a frustrating couple of weeks watching from the sidelines and is hungry to get back into action.”

Wales have made four changes, one positional, to their starting line-up for the visit of the world champions South African, to the Millennium Stadium on Saturday following defeat to Australia in the Invesco Perpetual Series opener last weekend. WRU Lee Byrne returns from injury to fill the full-back birth leaving Ospreys colleague James Hook to take up his position at inside centre, partnering Blues stalwart Tom Shanklin at the expense of another Osprey Andrew Bishop who moves to the bench. The other change in the backline sees uncapped Scarlets wing and former Llandovery and Scarlets Academy player George North handed his first international chance, becoming Wales’ 1,078th player at just 18 years of age. Up front the coaches have said same again to the forward pack, led by captain Matthew Rees, which impressed against the Wallabies last time out with the exception of Martyn Williams who returns in the back row for his 97th cap in place of his injured Blues colleague Sam Warburton (calf). Elsewhere, Ryan Jones (Ospreys) and Andy Powell (Wasps) both return to bench duty in place of the promoted Williams and Dieniol Jones (Blues), who misses out, while Ospreys pivot Dan Biggar makes way for Bishop.
A few years ago… okay more’n 20 (i.e. the 80′s) Tony Greig famously questioned Merv Hughes’ inclusion in the Aussie ODI squad to face Sri Lanka. Fat Merv opened the bowling, Fat Merv ripped Lanka to pieces… and Bill Lawrie similarly gloated on air “Stick thadup yer arse Tony Greig!”… I have a similar gloat today…. On Friday afternoon I had the displeasure of reading my least favorite “rugby writer” (I use the words guardedly as some may assume I in some way attribute some form of rudimentary knowledge to the fool) Peter Bills. having gloatingly castigated the Boks throughout the Tri-Nations for their staid stuffy conservatism, Bills was back to his old tricks despite all logic dictating otherwise. In this pre Ireland piece he wrote that he hoped the Boks had learnt something from their Tri-Nations humiliation as well as Australia’s thrilling win in Hong Kong. The days of successful Bok rugby with its staid forwards and defence as strengths was now obviously over and the new era of soda pop wannabe league had arrived. He expressed the view that if the Boks had brought their usual game to Europe … well let’s just say he reckoned we’d get [...]

The naming of the side to take on Ireland confirms the muddled thinking that has beset Springbok rugby. DAN RETIEF spells it out. It includes a fullback who was not in the original squad at centre; a flank who was not in the original squad but who now gets a test cap; a centre who is struggling to shake off an injury and who is being backed up by an uncapped flyhalf; a halfback pairing who have very little experience of playing together and who have not done so for a long time; a No8 who is palpably out of form and a replacement centre who is clearly only fit enough to be on the bench. Bulls fullback Zane Kirchner was not in the original squad but came in when Juan de Jongh went out. He will now play centre although goodness when last, if ever, he played there – alongside the unendingly injured Jean de Villiers whose groin strain has necessitated having young Pat Lambie in reserve on the bench. In Brian O’Driscoll and Gordon D’Arcy South Africa’s midfielders will be up against the best centre pairing in the Six Nations. Would it not have been better, when the [...]

70% chance of rain in Dublin Thank goodness for those reassuring 243 Test caps, plus the benefit of renowned provincial combinations, among the Springbok front five. Rob Houwing, Sport24 That is probably the main comfort South African fans will take following the announcement of a necessarily “cobbled-together” side to play Ireland in the first game of the Grand Slam tour in Dublin on Saturday. In short, it features a pot-luck backline in several respects … and still without even the benefit of match-day certainty because Jean de Villiers is bracketed with 20-year-old Patrick Lambie at inside centre to give his groin injury every chance to clear up in time for a match in conditions he will know pretty well from his club stint in the country. When all is said and done, the overall composition of the starting XV named on Thursday looks reasonable enough under the trying circumstances – certainly not quite as eccentric as some might have initially feared from that ever-quirky chap named Peter de Villiers. Whether it is in combination with the infinitely more experienced De Villiers or baby-faced Lambie at No 12, the all-new outside centre Zane Kirchner, far more at home at fullback, has [...]
