Rassie Erasmus tried to make a statement when he resigned from his post at Western Province rugby, the question now remains whether anyone would be willing to listen? Unfortunately I don’t think so. History (as Rassie touched on when he chatted to Gavin Rich) at this union suggests that nothing will change where on-field results will take a backseat to political agendas being pushed from inside the corridors of WP Rugby HQ. In speaking out, Erasmus said that the top brass at WP would be best served to re-evaluate their criteria for appointing the next top coaching boss at Newlands, because as things stand what is required is not a person employed on his rugby and coaching ability, but rather someone who can deal efficiently with politics. The statement itself is a shocking indictment of the state of affairs in South Africa’s biggest union and just how badly matters have deteriorated over the last decade. Any professional organization at any level has to create a culture of excellence amongst all its members if it has any hope to succeed. Even if you only have one or two disruptive figures in such an environment you stand a chance to derail any [...]

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has asked media to assist in alerting people to a cellphone scam aimed at rugby supporters. SARU’s offices have received a number of calls from concerned individuals who have been the recipient of SMSs telling them they have won considerable sums of money in a Rugby World Cup promotion run by the International Rugby Board (IRB). Neither the IRB – nor SARU – has run such a promotion and the SMS should be deleted. Typically, the message reads: “Congratulation!!!Your cell Number.has won 960,000.In the IRB Rugby 2011 Promotions with RefA543B. Call Mr.Antony Smith on [cell number], to activate & claim”. Members of the public who have called the number have been asked for their banking details or home address or to purchase cellphone airtime, which they are told not to load. “We can categorically confirm that no competition has ever existed of this nature and that the SMS should be ignored,” said a SARU spokesman.

The ANC’s newspaper, the New Age reports that Super 14 franchise money is also now adding a heap to Lions troubles. I recall a movie about a trucker starring Kurt Russel in my youth. It was called Big Trouble in little China. Anyway so Kurt Russel runs into a very pretty Chinese girl whom he helps escape some ruffians. But things are not what they seem and he lands up getting deeper and deeper into a weird supernatural war that had not planned for in his life. Eventually the whole lot ends happily though. The point though is that the Lions a again the subject of a financial troubles rumour mill. And it seems that the more people dig or listen the more trouble is boiling out from a huge pot. The newest one comes courtesy of a the New Age, the ANC’s newspaper who reported this story last week whilst everyone else in the rugby world was trying to guess who Heyneke Meyer’s assistants would be. This shows you how out of touch New Age is with rugby but that there. Seems that when the Lions and Cheetahs split, the Lions franchise held onto two feeder unions as franchise [...]

Either SA Rugby is busy with a very cunning plan, or they have completely lost the plot – either way, there is no way in hell the Kings can be included in SuperRugby 2013 as SA Rugby promised. The news of the Kings automatic entry into SupeRugby in 2013 hardly hit the headlines when it was announced last week Friday which can only be described as an extremely clever PR move by SA Rugby to announce it at the same time the new Springbok coach was named. In a way it’s understandable that the South African public would rather read what is no doubt the best news we have had in years in Heyneke’s appointment, but since Friday I have been struggling to figure out just how Jurie Roux and his friends got a unanimous vote from the council to include the Kings next year? The official line was the Kings will play in 2013, but how they will be accommodated will only be made clear in March, well into the current SupeRugby campaign. The only logical reasoning I could come up with is that SA Rugby assured all the current franchises that none of them will have to drop [...]

I received this in my inbox and thought it would be worthwhile to publish it, word for word, given the criticism WP Rugby has been under in recent months. Open letter to WP Club Rugby Administrators, Media, Players, Fans & Sponsors. The following letter serves to put various matters relating to the Western Province Football Union in perspective. It is factual and is written to ultimately reassure all WP Rugby fans, players, sponsors and administrators that rugby within Western Province is alive and well. We will be sending these facts to you on a regular basis. The reality is that the WPRFU is in excellent shape, youth rugby is improving and growing, clubs are getting more exposure and the professional teams are doing well. Solid structures are in place to ensure sustainability and new player registrations have increased dramatically. The WPRFU players and families are enjoying their Saturday afternoon rugby more than ever. The success of the WPRFU must not be measured only by the amount of silverware in the cupboard. In South Africa it would be more prudent to also look at other matters such as social development, transformation, capacity building and empowerment at grass roots level. The Western [...]

The Southern Kings’ place in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition in 2013 was reaffirmed at a Special Council Meeting of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) in Cape Town on Friday. Proposals on mechanisms to identity the four other South African entrants will be considered at a SARU Special General Meeting on March 30. “The decision to include the Southern Kings in the 2013 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament was unanimously confirmed by the members,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SARU on Friday. “We will now look at the options to identify the other entrants to the competition, which will include further discussions with our SANZAR partners on the possibility of including a sixth South African team in the competition. “The Unions will also be making their own recommendations and the outcome of those discussions and other proposals will be tabled for the Executive Council and ultimately a General Meeting to consider.”

Heyneke Meyer will be the new Springbok coach after a Special General Meeting of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) ratified his proposed appointment in Cape Town on Friday. The 44-year-old Blue Bulls rugby executive takes over from Peter de Villiers, who coached the Springboks from 2008 to 2011. He will take charge as head coach of the 1995 and 2007 Rugby World Cup champions for the first time against England in Durban on June 9. Meyer said he relished the opportunity to make all South Africans proud of the Springboks. “Having been involved with the Blue Bulls for so long, I’ve experienced first hand how passionate South African rugby supporters are,” said Meyer. “I know the importance of rugby in the South African psyche and will do everything in my power to ensure the Springboks remain among the pace setters of world rugby. “I’m very happy to accept this enormous honour and massive responsibility,” he said. Meyer was head coach of the Vodacom Bulls when they became the first South African team to lift the coveted Vodacom Super 14 trophy in 2007. Before that, he steered the Vodacom Blue Bulls to Absa Currie Cup titles in 2002, 2003, 2004 [...]

The Sharks have confirmed that several of their senior players have extended their contracts at the Durban-based outfit. Sport24 Speculation has been rife in recent months over the futures of Du Plessis brothers Bismarck and Jannie, but the union said that the two have signed new deals along with several others. Commercial Manager, Rudolf Straeuli said: “Youngsters like Lwazi Mvovo, S’Bura (Sibusiso) Sithole, Lubabalo Mthembu andPatrick Lambie have all extended their contracts, as well as senior players like Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira. “We have secured all the good young players and Springboks, none of them are leaving. “We also have a stable coaching staff and environment and in the near future, we may be able to announce more signings.” No details of the contracts have been given, but Straeuli confirmed that several of the players have signed for at least another two seasons. This comes after news broke earlier on Tuesday that they re-signed 27-year-old lock Steven Sykes on a 12-month deal. Sykes will boost a relatively inexperienced second row that includes Alistair Hargreaves, Ross Skeate, Anton Bresler and Jandre Marais. “Steven Sykes is coming back,” Sharks coach John Plumtree said. ” As soon as I heard that he [...]

Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) president Kevin de Klerk says the statement issued on Tuesday from their former partners Guma TAC was “filled with many half truths” and says the union had never been unwilling to pay back any money. Sport24 “They are entitled to pursue any kind of action, but it is their modus operandi trying to discredit us through the media,” he said. “We will defend such actions and we will let the legal process decide.” The Guma TAC group on Tuesday initiated legal proceedings to recover their loan following the souring of their relationship with the embattled Golden Lions Rugby Union. “We confirm that today we have initiated legal proceedings to recover our loan from the Golden Lions,” the Guma TAC group said in a statement. Guma TAC, which is jointly owned by Robert Gumede and Ivor Ichikowitz, cut ties with the GLRU in June 2011, shortly before it was to have purchased a 49.9 percent stake in the union. Guma TAC said in a document leaked to the media last year that the GLRU owed the company more than R14 million in loans. At the time, Gumede and Ichikowitz accused the Lions’ executive of keeping the potential [...]

Although the official announcement will only be made on Friday, Heyneke Meyer will be the next Bok coach – a decision which I can only describe as insane. Calm down, I don’t mean insane from a SA Rugby perspective, they have managed to get the best guy for the job – but for the life of me I cannot figure why Meyer would want to get involved in this mess. Meyer has managed to build an empire in Pretoria over the last decade or so – the likes we have not seen since the 80’s where WP Rugby dominated the local scene. He has taken a union and team in turmoil at the time to not only local success in the Currie Cup, but also the first (and only) team to win a Super Rugby title. You do not need to dig too deep or look too far to find how players and peers describe Meyer’s amazing ability to identify, develop and motivate players and teams with his uncompromising belief of discipline and work ethic. Along with ex-Crusaders coach Robbie Deans, Meyer is one of the very few coach’s around in world rugby who has nailed a successful blueprint for [...]
