Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) president Kevin de Klerk says the statement issued on Tuesday from their former partners Guma TAC was “filled with many half truths” and says the union had never been unwilling to pay back any money. Sport24 “They are entitled to pursue any kind of action, but it is their modus operandi trying to discredit us through the media,” he said. “We will defend such actions and we will let the legal process decide.” The Guma TAC group on Tuesday initiated legal proceedings to recover their loan following the souring of their relationship with the embattled Golden Lions Rugby Union. “We confirm that today we have initiated legal proceedings to recover our loan from the Golden Lions,” the Guma TAC group said in a statement. Guma TAC, which is jointly owned by Robert Gumede and Ivor Ichikowitz, cut ties with the GLRU in June 2011, shortly before it was to have purchased a 49.9 percent stake in the union. Guma TAC said in a document leaked to the media last year that the GLRU owed the company more than R14 million in loans. At the time, Gumede and Ichikowitz accused the Lions’ executive of keeping the potential [...]

Arch enemy Bryce Lawrence has been snubbed by SANZAR refs for games in SA Seems SANZAR’s Kiwi and Aus partners have a modicum of decency somewhere though seeing as on publication of the game schedules this dork has been allocated no games to officiate in South Africa. Ostensibly at the request of SARU , which apparently says their players need to focus oin the tournament and not Bryce, have asked him not to officviate in SA… a request SANZAR Granted. Following his match fixing in the RWC quarter final, Andre Watson publicly unleashed hell on Bryce Lawrence… who was rewarded for his efforts by being named New Zealand referee of the year 2011 (understandably seeing as he saved New Zealand from facing the Boks). Lawrence himself says he would have wanted to come to SA because he would want to try and resolve things and put this behind him was not allowed a say and when Sports 24 tried to contact SANZAR ref boss Lyndon Bray he was unavailable for comment. If you want my view I say I say good on Oregon Hoskins who has weaved some political rope pulling behind the scenes with Andre Watson… and about time [...]

The Lions have named their team for the DHL pre-season warm up. John Mitchell has named his strongest possible squad for the warm up against the Stormers, but has enlarged it to 26. Of the starting XV only newcomer from the Griquas, and off season lock signing Hendrik Roodt, does not have super rugby experience. Elton Jantjes was not considered because of his injury rehabilitation. Similarly Bok prop CJ Van Der Linde is still a few weeks away from readiness. The team is: 15. Jaco Taute 14. Deon Van Rensburg 13. Lionel Mapoe 12. Doppies La Grange 11. Michael Killian 10. Butch James 9. Michael Bondesio 8. Warren Whiteley 7. Josh Strauss (C) 6. Derrick Minnie 5. Franco Van Der Merwe 4.
What would the country’s five Super Rugby franchises wish as main presents in their stockings on December 25? Rob Houwing, Sport24 BULLS: A new pair of world-class locks Has any rugby side – ever! – suddenly surrendered not just two but three proven world-class locks all in one go? It’s hard to think of an instance which remotely matches the Bulls’ fate in losing the services of all of Victor Matfield (retirement), Bakkies Botha (Toulon) and Danie Rossouw (Suntory Goliath) after the 2011 season. The trio, admittedly with Rossouw often operating as a loose forward although his versatility was a sublime asset, contributed hugely to a hatful of Bulls trophy-grabs in either Super Rugby or the Currie Cup over the course of 12 generally glittering years at Loftus for Botha and Rossouw and 10 for lineout juggernaut Matfield. Fortunately Flip van der Merwe and Juandre Kruger are no slouches as the likely start-out second row pair in Super Rugby 2012, although the former has sometimes shown disturbing signs of trying too hard to emulate Bakkies’s penchant for collecting cards … and no, not of the Christmas kind. SHARKS: A quality midfield This has been an Achilles heel for the Durbanites [...]

The Bulls are finally able to sport the logo PUMA, after they won a legal battle against Gilbert. The Bulls on Tuesday announced a five year partnership with sports brand PUMA. The clothing brand will be the official kit supplier to every team representing the Pretoria-based union. And according to Beeld this was made possible after a legal battle between the Blue Bulls Company, the legal arm of the Bulls, and their previous kit sponsor, Gilbert. Gilbert was the union’s main clothing and equipment sponsor for many years. The Bulls wanted to end the partnership due to what they described as “poor service delivery and other problems”. But Gilbert took the matter to court when it heard of the Bulls’ interest in PUMA. The saga was ended on Tuesday when an arbitrator decided in favour of the Blue Bulls Company. The Blue Bulls were unable to play with either Gilbert or PUMA’s jerseys in the recent Currie Cup and the players were forced to cover Gilbert’s logo with stickers on their practice jerseys. The Blue Bulls’ CEO Barend van Graan says he is overjoyed that they could finally sign up with PUMA after all the legal problems of the last [...]

There’s no offer on the table from the Golden Lions to lure the services of Springbok centre Frans Steyn to Johannesburg. News24 Steyn’s agent, Gerrie Swart, confirmed to Volksblad last week that Steyn is considering a return to South Africa, which sparked renewed interest as to which union would be interested in Steyn’s services. “We are busy negotiating with Racing (Steyn’s club in France). Frans will always consider playing in South Africa. He wants to play for the Springboks. But there is nothing concrete,” said Swart, who was in France discussing future plans with the Bok centre. The Lions fought hard for Steyn’s services earlier this year when the union’s former business partner, Robert Gumede, was keen to lure the Springbok to the union. But the split between the GLRU and Gumede’s GUMA TAC-consortium put paid to such hopes at the time. And Lions’ provisional CEO, Ruben Moggee, confirmed to Rapport that they haven’t made any offer for Steyn. This comes, despite their coach, John Mitchell admitting they would enjoy having a player of the calibre of Steyn on their books. The Lions have since forged a new business partnership with businessman Altmann Allers, but it looks unlikely that they [...]

The Executive Council of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) has called a Special General Council meeting for January with a view to ratifying the appointment of the Springbok coach. The meeting will take place in Cape Town on January 27, 2012 and is required by the SARU constitution, which specifies that the appointment of the Springbok coach has to be approved by the General Council to become official. The General Council will receive a recommendation from the Executive Council which will meet 24 hours earlier to finalise the selection process. SARU will make no further comment on the matter until an appointment is confirmed due to issues of confidentiality.
Stormers turn to 18-year old, welcomes Adi Jacobs and have an eye on Boland’s Bolla Conradie and Elgar Watts. Adnaan Mohamed, Son The Stormers are looking to blood a schoolboy at flyhalf in next year’s Super Rugby competition. Stormers coach Allister Coetzee confirmed on Sunday that the South African Schools flyhalf Timothy Swiel has been training with the Cape franchise and that they are looking at the 18-year-old Bishops schoolboy as a possible long term solution in the crucial No 10 jersey. Coetzee admitted that he still hasn’t seen enough of the youngster, but they will give him an opportunity to train with the team to show what he is capable of. “Yes, he has been training with the squad. But he is still very young and I haven’t really seen much of him yet. He will however get an opportunity to rub shoulders with experienced Springboks to gain first-hand knowledge on how things are done,” said Coetzee. It is hoped that Swiel could make the same impact that James O’Connor has done for Australia and Springbok duo Patrick Lambie for the Sharks and Elton Jantjies for the Lions. STRUGGLED WITH FLYHALVES “Timo (Timothy) still has a long way to [...]

The Lions have released several second string players from their contracts with the biggest name released being Burton Francis (who is already training with the Stormers). In what appears to be an exercise long overdue to get rid of dead wood the Lions have viciously pared down the size of their professional squad with former Bulls and Lions Super 14 and 15 flyhalf Burton Francis one of the prominent names cut from the squad. Francis has now achieved journeyman status as he has been seen practicing with the Stormers already. Francis’ release was virtually a foregone conclusion as John Mitchell has made it clear he will be using Butch James and Elton Jantjes as first choice flyhalves next season. Locks David Bulbring and George Earle have also been released from their contracts. Wing Bernhard Botha has also been released after he obtained a Springbok Sevens contract. Senior players who for some reason are still on the Lions books costing money who have been released now include Tonderai Chavanga, JP JOubert, Chris Jonck, Walter Venter, David De Villiers, Marius Delport, Robert Kruger, Jacques Lombaard, Jonathan Mukoena and Johan Van Deventer. Then there are hangers on players with contracts who have now [...]

The Golden Lions must now confirm their emergence from the rugby doldrums by aiming to ditch their traditional also-rans reputation in Super Rugby. Rob Houwing, Sport24 Of course there is no special tradition – and pretty much the same thing applies in, say, New Zealand – of domestic champions necessarily going on to great achievement at the elevated level of the broader southern hemisphere competition. For one thing, the nature of the Currie Cup and NPC has changed fairly significantly with the ever-diminishing presence of leading international stars in them. But in the case of the Lions, being able to tick a “much better” box in Super Rugby 2012 must nevertheless be a priority as the dust settles on their brilliant Absa Currie Cup final humbling of the Sharks in Johannesburg on Saturday and future aspirations enter the radar. Frankly, they have not been anything resembling a force in Super Rugby since the days, coincidentally, of a prior New Zealander to John Mitchell as head coach – Laurie Mains. Under his guidance, and powered by a brawny pack featuring such crusty names as Johan Ackermann, Willie Meyer and Andre Venter, the then Cats (a not always harmonious alliance between the [...]
