Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers admitted to being bitter at the way he left the job, and has said he “feels sorry” for new coach Heyneke Meyer, who is is already “on the back foot.” Sport24 De Villiers was speaking on Redi Tlhabi on Talk Radio 702 about his tenure as Bok coach when he expressed his sympathy for Meyer after he was only appointed last week into the position, despite the fact that De Villiers’s contract ended at the end of last year. De Villiers, whose stay as Bok coach was both controversial and interesting, used the recent decision by the South African Rugby Union to bring in the Kings into Super Rugby from 2013 as an example of how tough it would be for the new coach. The pitfalls of ending last in the South African conference could see a franchise not play Super Rugby in 2013, meaning that it was do or die for some coaches in the competition. This wouldn’t impact well on the national cause. “I feel sorry for Heyneke, because he is starting on the back foot. The franchises are already set for the new season and know the news that a new [...]

Heyneke Meyer says one of his greatest challenges will be to have the country’s Super Rugby franchises on the same page. Sport24 Meyer said on Monday that his ultimate aim would be for all the teams in South Africa to adopt a similar style of rugby. “In future I would like to install a national style of play and defence and all the attributes that go with it, and everybody should buy in,” Meyer said. “I am realistic and know you can’t force people to play the same, but there should at least be a common goal and places where you can touch base.” Meyer said it would be imperative to use the Super Rugby coaches as a sounding board as they worked with the players on a day-to-day basis. He added that communication will be key in sustaining a good relationship with the coaches. “I would have loved to have started with an extensive planning session where we could put in a national strategy with the way we want to play, but at this stage it is a little bit late,” he said. “My main aim is to set a great working relationship with them because they see the [...]

New Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer says he is in no hurry to announce a permanent captain for the national side. News24 “I’m not going to appoint a long-term captain immediately. I want to pick a short-term captain, get to know the players and then make an informed decision,” Meyer told the Rapport newspaper. “The task of the Bok captaincy is not something that should be made cheap. It’s a huge task and an unbelievable honour. “Therefore I don’t want to appoint someone for the long-term and then later realise that I’ve made the wrong decision. “I will monitor it on a daily basis,” said Meyer. Meyer also stated he will make the decision on merit. Previous coach Peter de Villiers came under fire for continuing to select John Smit as captain while many critics believed Bismarck du Plessis was the better hooker. “It’s a fine balance but I think your captain has to be chosen on merit. “It also depends on what you want from a captain. I think it’s important that he conducts himself well with the media and carries out the right image towards the world. “He needs to be strategic on the field, because I’m not there.

Twelve reasons why Heyneke Myer is best equipped to coach the Springboks for the next four years. Jan de Koning, rugby365 His appointment comes four years after he was done a great injustice, when last-minute political meddling saw Peter de Villiers replace Jake White. In the words of SARU President Oregan Hoskins, Meyer lost out back in 2008 for reasons other than rugby considerations. But now he gets his chance and Jan de Koning gives you some very good reasons why Meyer is the right man for the job: ►1. He personifies professionalism through the three D’s – determination, dedication and decisiveness. ►2. Behind the guarded, tough exterior is a loyal person – not just a family man and a man of faith, but above all, he is a man that never regards himself as bigger than the game. ►3. He is articulate – a person who can explain the game and its intricate tactics to even the most unvarnished of observers, never getting overly excited. ►4. He thrives on challenges – the tougher the better. Having studied sports psychology at the University of Pretoria, his motivational abilities are legendary. Two matches that epitomise this are the record 92-3 victory [...]

Heyneke Meyer will be the new Springbok coach after a Special General Meeting of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) ratified his proposed appointment in Cape Town on Friday. The 44-year-old Blue Bulls rugby executive takes over from Peter de Villiers, who coached the Springboks from 2008 to 2011. He will take charge as head coach of the 1995 and 2007 Rugby World Cup champions for the first time against England in Durban on June 9. Meyer said he relished the opportunity to make all South Africans proud of the Springboks. “Having been involved with the Blue Bulls for so long, I’ve experienced first hand how passionate South African rugby supporters are,” said Meyer. “I know the importance of rugby in the South African psyche and will do everything in my power to ensure the Springboks remain among the pace setters of world rugby. “I’m very happy to accept this enormous honour and massive responsibility,” he said. Meyer was head coach of the Vodacom Bulls when they became the first South African team to lift the coveted Vodacom Super 14 trophy in 2007. Before that, he steered the Vodacom Blue Bulls to Absa Currie Cup titles in 2002, 2003, 2004 [...]

he Cheetahs’ Springbok flank Juan Smith has undergone a follow-up operation to his Achilles but is expected to start training in two to three weeks’ time. The Volksblad newspaper reports that Smith went for an operation in Pretoria on Wednesday which has forced him back onto crutches but Cheetahs team doctor Ian Morris says there’s no reason for concern. While this setback will delay Smith’s comeback and could see him miss the Cheetahs’ overseas leg of the Super Rugby tournament, it will be beneficial for the flanker in the long run. Morris is “positive and optimistic” that – despite this being Smith’s fourth operation – he is on his way back to the playing field. Morris says Smith’s wounds must now heal before he could start practicing again in two or three weeks’ time. Reports from Volksblad earlier in the week which stated the flanker was on his way to the Cape to see a specialist were not true. He went to Pretoria instead. Smith injured his Achilles in the Cheetahs’ first Super Rugby clash against the Bulls on 25 February last year. He started jogging again at the start of this year but went to see a specialist in [...]
