The Currie Cup starts this weekend and it does not get any better than to see Province and the Blue Bulls clash in the first round of matches.
Although Province have been in the news the last couple of weeks again for all that is off the field I am sure that the players and coach John Dobson can not wait to get the Currie Cup started.
They have been hard at work with Dobson that will take charge of the Currie Cup side this year to prepare for his first season as head coach next year in Super Rugby.
Dobson has been working with a wider squad of 36 players as they prepare to start their campaign against the Vodacom Blue Bulls this weekend at Newlands.
Province will have home games against the Vodacom Blue Bulls, Xerox Golden Lions and ISG Pumas with away games against the Tafel Lager Griquas, Cell C Sharks and Toyota Free State Cheetahs.
After the short league stage we will see the top four sides going into a semi-final and final to get the 2019 Currie Cup Champion.
Dobson have the same management team in Dawie Snyman (backline coach) Norman Laker (defence coach) and Hanyani Shimange (forward coach) as they try again to get into that playoff spots.
Robbie Fleck, will still be involved at Western Province Rugby as technical coach to all the professional teams after he finish his stint as the Stormers coach.
Dobson believe that he has a strong squad of players although he has lost some players who has ended their contracts with the union and some that are injured.
With the short competition format no team can afford too many losses which means you need to hit the ground running from week 1.
This weekend match against the Blue Bulls is very important as it will set a tone for the competition and both teams will be going for a win.
“We are planning ahead to next year by refining our processes and how we go about things, but there will be no compromises made in this Currie Cup campaign, we owe that to our faithful supporters,” Dobson said.
