Another week of Currie Cup rugby and another week of upsets as we go into the last round of matches this coming weekend.

It was no surprise when we saw some upsets which changed the Log Standings yet again with a few teams still fighting for that top spot. Griquas has assured them a place in the playoffs as they sit nicely on top of the log after 5 rounds of matches.

Match Report

Griquas showed why they having given themselves the tag as favourites this season beating Province on Friday in Kimberley 27-23.

Griquas was in control of the match from start to finish and although Province came back with two tries in the last five minutes, it would have always been a struggle to win the game for the men from Cape Town.

Griquas surprise in getting the upper hand in the scrums which put Province on the back foot form the start and force them to play catch-up rugby from the start.

Griquas manage to build a nice lead in the first half which was just too much for Province to comeback from and a yellow card also did not help the visitors.

Coach Dobson was seen with hands over his face in that second half as Province were making some schoolboy errors and decisions on the field.

This loss has now put Province in danger to not making the playoffs as the Sharks with their win moved 1 point ahead of them over the weekend.

It wil come down to Province needing to beat Free State in Bloemfontein and hoping the Blue Bulls beat the Sharks in Pretoria.

Scorers:

Tafel Lager Griquas – Tries: Ederies Arendse (2), Eduan Keyter. Conversions: George Whitehead (3). Penalties: Whitehead (2)

DHL  Western Province – Tries: Seabelo Senatla (2), Nama Xaba. Conversion: SP Marais. Penalties: SP Marais (2)

Match Report

In a high scoring game the Free State Cheetahs had just enough in the tank to beat the Pumas in Nelspruit to secure them a spot in the playoffs.

A home semi-final is still up for grabs but at least they know they will be part of the final four come playoff time. Free State will want to correct the silly mistakes which every time cost them points. In respect to the Pumas, Free State kept them in the game through the schoolboy errors they made in the match.

Letting through five tries would not have pleased coach Smith and something they will have to look at when they face up to Province this weekend.

Full credit to the Pumas who never gave up but they are looking at a promotion relegation match in the next few weeks to stay in the Currie Cup Premier competition.

Scorers:

Phakisa Pumas: Tries: Alwayno Visagie (3), Devon Williams, Jeandré Rudolph. Conversions: Chris Smith (3). Penalty goals: Smith (2).

Toyota Free State Cheetahs: Tries: Jasper Wiese, Clayton Blommetjies, Benhard Janse van Rensburg (2), Ruan Pienaar, Louis Fouché. Conversions: Fouché (5). Penalty goal: Fouché.

Golden Lions Result Sharks
  28

Match Report

30

The Golden Lions will kick themselves this morning after again starting poorly and having to play catchup rugby on Sunday when they loss at home against the Sharks.

Jeremy Ward was the Sharks hero of the day scoring two tries that added to the tally of 30 points.

The Golden Lions kicking at goal was poor and outscoring the Sharks with four tries to three still could not manage to beat the men from Durban.

With 17 points on the log the Golden Lions will be fighting for a home semi when they travel to Kimberley to face the Griquas who have now beaten all the other Super Rugby franchises.

Easy it will not be in Kimberley and we expect a full house at the stadium as Griquas go to secure a home semi final and final.

The Sharks have given them a chance having to beat the Blue Bulls at Loftus to make the playoffs. If they do not manage to do so and Province beat Free State then the champions will be out of the competition.

Scorers:

Xerox Golden Lions: Tries: Shaun Reynolds (2), Tyrone Green, Marnus Schoeman. Conversion: Reynolds. Penalty goals: Reynolds (2).

Cell C Sharks: Tries: Sanele Nohamba, Jeremy Ward (2). Conversions: Nohamba (2), Rhyno Smith. Penalty goals: Nohamba (2). Drop goal: Boeta Chamberlain.
