When any New Zealand team face another New Zealand team we already expect a cracker of a match and that is just what we got from the Highlanders and the Chiefs.
Both teams looked very sharp in the first forty minutes and display the skill we got used to in Super Rugby from them.
It was the Highlanders that got the scoreboard ticking with a penalty early on but it was two mistakes from them that gave the Chiefs two intercept tries to take their lead to 14-3.
The Highlanders did play some decent rugby and slowly play their way back and got two more penalties to take their score to 9 point at half time trailing the Chiefs by only five points. They would have been disappointed not to score a try themselves especially in that last 5 min when they were putting all the pressure on the Chiefs try line.
The Chiefs were able to hold the defensive line and kept them out and only conceded three points.
Defensively both teams were not too bad in the first half but mistakes was something the Highlanders would have talked about at half time.
The second half was much of the same with the Highlanders with great opportunities to score but great defense from Chiefs kept them out.
The Chiefs added to their try scoring telly and scored their third try early in the second half to take their lead to 21-9.
Both teams showed great ability on attack and spread the ball as much as they could with the Highlanders just not able to get over.
They did get another two penalties to take their score to 15 points trailing the Chiefs by 6 after 65 min.
One has to give credit to the way the Chiefs defended and kept up throughout the match.
The Chiefs scored a penalty to take the score to 24-15 and with a few minutes to go the Highlanders were still in search of their first try.
They tried but the Chiefs defense kept hitting them back and with four minutes to go the Highlanders was camping on the Chiefs try line.
At the end the Chiefs deserve the win and started their Super Rugby with a great win of 24-15 against the Highlanders.
