Six Nations ’19: SCO v IRE (Result)

Ireland got back to winning ways on Saturday against Scotland when they beat them 22-13 but it was far from convincing.

As with last weeks test against the English, Ireland made plenty of mistakes and handling errors on attack and seemed to be missing that edge they had last year which made them the best team of the year.

The fact that Sexton has not shown any of his class for two weeks maybe part of Ireland problem.

Scotland will be kicking themselves for not taking the opportunity on the night. They had enough opportunities and had enough ball to cause another upset but a lack lasted second half cost them at the end.

As excited the first forty minutes was as boring was the second half.

The second half just looked like two overweight heavy weight boxers trying to rekindle the brilliant past of yesteryear.

Scotland had a great start to the test putting enough pressure on Ireland to force them into mistakes and putting them pinned in their own twenty two.

They tried turning the early pressure into the opening try but Ireland defence hold on which force them to go for poles.

With the early lead Scotland kept the pressure on until Ireland’s Tommy Seymour fielded a kick inside his 22 before throwing a wild pass to Sean Maitland, who failed to gather. Murray pounced on the loose ball and had an easy run-in over the try-line.

Shortly after Ireland put together the best play of the match with Peter O’Mahony and Johnny Sexton combined superbly in the build-up to create space for Stockdale, who gathered a pass from Sexton just inside Scotland’s half, and he did well to outsprint the cover defence before crossing the whitewash.

Scotland still looked the better side even if they were 12-3 down on the scoreboard.

Sam Johnson got over for the Scots try in the 29th minute of the test.

That made it a two point game with Scotland still in control of the test.

It was brilliant defence that kept Scotland out and they teams went into the break with Ireland leading 12-10.

Ireland looked better after halftime but the test went a bit backwards.

In the 56th minute of the test Carbery got a telling break before throwing a long pass to Earls to score Irelands third try.

Scotland added another penalty which reduced the lead to 19-13 as the teams went into the last quarter of the test.

Ireland got another penalty which extend the lead again to 22-13 and that was that for Scotland.

Surely a test that Scotland could and maybe should have won but Ireland was good enough to outscore them even if it was not a good night out for them.

    The scorers:

    For Scotland:
    Try: Johnson
    Con: Laidlaw
    Pens: Laidlaw 2

    For Ireland:
    Tries: Murray, Stockdale, Earls
    Cons: Sexton, Carbery
    Pen: Carbery
