Rassie gaan Heyneke help

Cheetahs beat Stormers

The Cheetahs scored a surprise 22-14 win over the Stormers in their Pre-Season Series clash, thanks mainly to a 14-point contribution from their flyhalf Johan Goosen, at Newlands, on Saturday evening. Goosen’s boot kept the Cheetahs ahead for most of the way and when the Stormers were still trying to chase down a five-point deficit, substitute flyhalf Sias Ebersohn put the issue beyond doubt with a long-range penalty, two minutes ahead of the final whistle. The Stormers were full of running at the outset and some explosive breaks into the Cheetahs’ half held out the promise of an early score. However, the Stormers’ runners needed to pin their ears back and take advantage of the space out wide but instead they relied on support to arrive. The Cheetahs’ defence stood up to the early tests and they kept their lines intact for the rest of the half. Their cause was helped by the Stormers’ poor option taking. The two flyhalves, Demetri Catrakilis (Stormers) and Goosen (Cheetahs) were responsible for all the first-half scoring. Goosen goaled two penalties and snapped over a drop goal, while Catrakilis was on target with two penalty goals (9-6). In the closing stages of the first [...]

Blitzbokke win Plate Final

Paul Treu’s Blitzbokke salvaged some pride (and points) in Wellington, New Zealand, when they emphatically beat Tonga 26-0 in the Plate Final. Two Cecil Afrika tries helped South Africa beat Tonga 24-0 to win the Plate Final earlier today at the New Zealand Sevens in Wellington. The Springbok Sevens collected 13 valuable points and move to 61 points overall, where they are now placed fourth in the standings of the HSBC Sevens World Series. New Zealand won their home tournament for a second year in a row after beating closest rivals Fiji 24-7 in the Cup Final. England beat Samoa 21-12 in the playoff for third place. Having gone unbeaten on the opening day, the Blitzbokke were relegated to the Plate division with a 21-5 loss to Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals, their first outing of match day two. They were then made to work hard against a determined Canadian side, who lost a close fought encounter 21-19. Tries by Stephan Dippenaar, Cornal Hendricks, Kyle Brown and three conversions by Afrika saw South Africa through against a stubborn Canada in the Plate semifinals. In the Plate Final, South Africa scored a convincing win over Tonga who could not repeat their [...]

Sanzar looking at key rule changes

SANZAR is to trial new disciplinary rules for a more consistent and simplified outcome during the 2012 Super Rugby competition. Sport24 These changes were announced by Sanzar CEO Greg Peters yesterday. The changes follow a cross-country Working Group meeting with representatives across all areas of the game held in September last year, which conducted a ‘clean sheet’ review of the SANZAR judicial process. The objectives of the review were to provide a system that is fair, consistent and simple with fewer full hearings and consequently reduced costs. “SANZAR has long held the view that the disciplinary process could be enhanced to provide for a more consistent and simplified outcome,” said Peters. “We believe that these changes are an important step in the right direction”. KEY CHANGES: 1. ON-FIELD REFEREE REFERRAL TO CITING COMMISSIONER Instances where a referee thinks an act of foul play has occurred but is not sure if a red card is warranted, or is unsure of the identity of a player. Where a player makes a complaint to a referee who did not see an incident. Can be in addition to a yellow card or penalty. Referred to the Citing Commissioner for review. 2. CITING COMMISSIONER ISSUES [...]

Grow up Stormers supporters!

I just could not let this pearl of a column from JJ Harmse pass by… Sport24- JJ Harmse South African rugby fans, especially those who support the one team from the big five that have not won any big trophies in the last decade, will have to grow up very fast. It was clear from comments made by those fans on blogs and forums like this (complimented by their local scribes down behind the wine curtain), after the welcome appointment of Heyneke Meyer as Springbok coach, that the style of play and not the result is still more important to them. Grow up people. Professional sport is about one thing and one thing only – winning! In tournament golf, you can hit the most spectacular drives and chip shots, but if they don’t add up after two rounds, you don’t play on the weekend. In professional sport it is the result that matters most. Which is why, in rugby, Meyer was such a popular choice to replace Peter de Villiers. The new Bok chief learned something very important in his early years as a professional coach. It is not how you play that matters, it is the result that will [...]

Black EP power is a mirage

How long will we still be fed the mirage that EP is the cradle of black rugby and deserves to play Super Rugby? Article by Boertjie I’m asking this question because the facts on the table points in a different direction – that the Kings and Estern Province are not even competitive in the South African set-up. To make any impression they will have to import players of note, and they will more or less all be white or a slightly darker shade of white. If the idea of transformation is the improvement of black rugby interests, the rugby hierarchy are missing the point. The Kings were born from an effort to give a lift black players, and we were told how black players in the province will be getting their fair share. What really happened is that the team degenerated into a second class team of white players. On top of it Cheeky Watson and Alan Solomons contracted overseas players lik Ross Kennedy and Clint Newland ahead of black talent. Last year the Kings failed to win the Vodacom Series and the B-section of the Currie Cup. In the final of the CC B-section they were thrashed 43-12 by [...]

Snor feels sorry for Heyneke

Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers admitted to being bitter at the way he left the job, and has said he “feels sorry” for new coach Heyneke Meyer, who is is already “on the back foot.” Sport24 De Villiers was speaking on Redi Tlhabi on Talk Radio 702 about his tenure as Bok coach when he expressed his sympathy for Meyer after he was only appointed last week into the position, despite the fact that De Villiers’s contract ended at the end of last year. De Villiers, whose stay as Bok coach was both controversial and interesting, used the recent decision by the South African Rugby Union to bring in the Kings into Super Rugby from 2013 as an example of how tough it would be for the new coach. The pitfalls of ending last in the South African conference could see a franchise not play Super Rugby in 2013, meaning that it was do or die for some coaches in the competition. This wouldn’t impact well on the national cause. “I feel sorry for Heyneke, because he is starting on the back foot. The franchises are already set for the new season and know the news that a new [...]
