DHL Western Province fullback Joe Pietersen has been called up to the Springbok squad in Port Elizabeth following the non-availability of a number of fullback options for Saturday’s third and final Castle Incoming Tour Test against England.

Pietersen will join the squad later on Monday as they prepare for Saturday’s Test at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Injuries to fullbacks Zane Kirchner (knee) and Pat Lambie (ankle) in the first two Tests, as well as Frans Steyn’s non-availability because he is getting married, has necessitated the call-up of Pietersen.

Pietersen, who had been struggling with a back injury, had been given the all clear by the Western Province medical team to join to Boks on Monday.

“Joe has always been part of our plans and also attended our final Planning Camp in Durban shortly before the England series started,” explained Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“Injuries are part of the game and something you can’t plan for, but we always knew Frans was not going to be available for this Test. Joe knows our systems and game plans and I’m sure he will slot in easily.”

Lambie and Willem Alberts, who injured knee ligaments in the second Test, both underwent scans on Monday morning in Port Elizabeth. They have not yet been ruled out of the Test and a further decision on their availability will be made by Wednesday.

“We’ve decided not to call up a replacement for Willem as we have enough cover amongst the loose forwards in the squad,” said Meyer.

  2. Joe currently the form 15 in the land… and a perfect bench option too playing 10, wing and 15…

I am a great believer if the player is not up to his best drop him and let him know that he can be replace…but looks like HM is the same as all the other coaches before him if they believe in a player they do not drop him top shake the player a bit.

    But that is just me

Morne Steyn has been brilliant (all bar is kicking for goal)… he’s getting the line away, he’s tackling well, his kicking out of hand excellent…

Lambie and Frans Steyn there yet they persist with Morne when he’s having a down-spell with place-kicks?

    That’s the only problem I currently see…

  5. Reply to bryce_in_oz @ 11:27 am: Helps you nothing if you persist with a kicker who kicks like Morne has been the past year. On attacking 10 we have much better than Morne, if he is their because of attack then we are bullshitting one another, if he is their for his kicking…well the record this year of Morne in Super/Boks speaks for itself.

I can understand that his general play is not bad but we have better than him if we look at general play…I do not say replace Morne with Grant all I say is that Morne either needs to step up or be send home to work on his game for 4 out of 9 against Australia or New Zeeland is just not gonna be good enough…like you say we have enough kickers in the team so then he must be the best attacking, defensive number 10 we have and I am not sure that is the case right now.

I am a big Morne fan but I am also a fan of not having gravy train players in a team.

  6. jacques, we are gonna diagree there. I dont rate Grant, agree with Lambie, but other than him we have no one better than morne at the moment. His distributioon has been amongst the best this season, and his defense is solid. Grant and all the rest lack in defense. Now if the Goose didnt have a broken wing, we’d be in bussiness. Cos he was the form ten in the country.

Dit werk beter as kombers.

    op my bed los.
My Kwikot het ná 3½ jaar opgepak, die
nuwe een se waarborg is net 18 maande.
    Blerrie skelms.
10 jaar waarborg – kalf hy ná 9 jaar, kry

Meeste komberse het so 2 of 3 meter se pyp insulasie ook in. Koop dit as n kit.

The order of the kicks went like this:

    missed conversion
    conversion
    penalty
    conversion
    dropped goal
    missed penalty
    Frans Steyn missed penalty
    penalty
    missed penalty
    missed conversion

I cannot see any logical point where the captain or coach, without the benefit of hind-sight, should have handed the kicking to another player.
Neither can I see which player he should have handed it to.

  14. Reply to Timeo @ 5:01 am:

Two tests… tally Morne’s success rate… compare with peers and what a test kicker should be hitting…

Then consider the options with Lambie, Frans and Ruan Pienaar in the side…

IMO Morne is the form 10 in the land currently and I would not be messing with that until perhaps Argentina and the EOYT…

  15. Reply to Aldo @ 3:43 am:

Miskien gebruik hulle dikker staal hier. My indruk is so 10-15 jaar as jy van die anode vergeet en langer as jy hom betyds vervang.

160liter elektriese geysers begin by so $400. Gas is omtrent $450.

  16. Reply to Timeo @ 5:15 am:

85 minutes is a long time to simply stick with a decision…

Lambie and RP (particularly after this season) are great options for an off-day… and for the life of me I cannot understand why Frans isn’t used more often for PK’s that aren’t almost impossible…
