Lions lose out on Big Joe, Joubert

Golden Lions CEO Manie Reyneke has poured cold water on rumours former Lions duo Joe van Niekerk and Ernst Joubert will be returning “home” before the Rugby World Cup.

Brenden Nel, Superstport

Van Niekerk is somewhat of a folk hero at Toulon in France, while Joubert is playing great rugby for Saracens in England. Both recently signed new contracts, according to Reyneke, taking them out of the equation for the Lions.

“In any case, we have enough cover at loose forward at the moment and a lot of talent in those positions,” Reyneke said.

The Lions have confirmed the signing of a trio of Sharks players ahead of this year’s Super 15 in Rory Kockott, Patrick Cilliers and Michael Rhodes, with Andre Pretorius also rumoured to be on his way back to Johannesburg.

  1. Not a bog loss at all

Joe never shaped for the Bkke so S 15 would have been way too fast fopr him

Ernst is a journeyman… good provencial player but no more than that…

  2. i disagree, van niekerk and joubert are wordlclass and have taken the french and british local comps by storm, along with mujati, alberts and deysel – these are very big losses.

the lions are missing some yster still and i cant see any really great buys, mapoe is probably the best, but he;s still operating only on potential.

  3. Ernst Joubert is playing some fine rugby… and was unlucky to not get a Bok call-up whilst last with the Lions… a real Teichman…

It seems with all this hype the Lions have only bought one good player and one decent player in Kockott and Maku…

They still lack quality front-rowers, locks, loose-forwards and a few backs… they’re going to struggle!

However their best forward thinking purchase has been the Bulls development coach…

    Still

Lions do not really need another experienced loose forward with Wikus Van Heerden in there.

They need a lock and an experienced prop… loose or tight…

Going for Beast was idiotic… they should have gone for that Cheetahs guy Coenie Oosthuizen I think… bubbling unders who will be Boks eventually but are presently outstanding CC performers.

One of the Strauss brothers or Bismarck Du Plessis would have been a good buy…

Even one of the Stormers hookers…

Forget the big buys for now…

Do it like the Cheetahs… win the CC then concentrate on Super Rugby after you get success …

Maku is solid… will be the first choice… that other dude at 90kg’s is too small… another Wepener type or even poaching Reyneke back would be a good addition…

Forgot about Wickus… so they have him, Baywatch, Rhodes (who I don’t rate) and the bearded oke… that’s it… need a game-breaker in there as well…

Derrick Minnie is very mu ch in the Joe Van Niekerk c1999 mode… as in in three years he will be Bok #8 and the Stormers will be trying to contract him…

    Rhodes will play VC

How do you rate Pat Cilliers?
