Match Report – Crusaders secure draw with late try against Sharks

It was always going to be a difficult match for the Sharks and no one, including me thought twice on the Sharks getting close to the Crusaders.

At the end the Crusaders needed more than 80 minutes to manage only a draw of 21-all against the Sharks.

Seems the Sharks play better in the away white trip, so maybe they must make that their permanent jumper.

It was only a last minute try that saved the champions from their second defeat of the season.

The Crusaders outscored the Sharks with three tries to none and it was the boot of Curwin Bosch that kept the Sharks for most of the game in front.

The Sharks broke the 25-match winning streak from the Crusaders with this draw which just show how good their performance was on the day.

The Crusaders may have missed a few star players but as the one team in the competition with the best squad, not many teams comes to Christchurch and hold them to a 21-all draw.

The Sharks started well and it was Bosch that put the first points on the board.

The Crusaders answered quickly back with the first of their three tries when Taylor got over the line. It was again a good buildup in the process to send Taylor over for the first try of the match.

That gave the Crusaders a 7-3 lead.

The Crusaders kept the pressure on the Sharks but their defence was everytime up for it and with two more penalties from Bosch the Sharks went into the break in the lead with 9-7.

The Sharks started the second half again with some urgency which able Bosch to extend their lead to 15-7 after two more penalties.

The Crusaders was always going to come back and they did with Goodhue crossing the line after a brilliant pass from Read.

This reduced the Sharks lead to only one point but Bosch extended the lead again with another penalty with 11 minutes to go.

The Sharks got another penalty within Bosch range but he missed the kick to the right. He got another shot at it a few minutes later which he slotted over and extend the lead further to 21-14 with minutes to go.

The Crusaders then launched last effort attempt to secure a draw with the Sharks defence initially holding them off. With the penalties staging up against the Sharks the home side finally got passed the desperate defence from the visitors to send Hunt over.

With the hooter gone already both sides had to settle for a draw.

It is maybe not the result both teams wanted but the two log points for the draw will be useful going forward specially for the Sharks.

Scorers:

Crusaders Crusaders  21  21 Sharks Sharks

Crusaders 21 (7) Tries: Codie Taylor, Jack Goodhue, Mitch Hunt

Conversions: Hunt (3)

Sharks 21 (9) Penalties: Curwin Bosch (7)

  1. Pity – could’ve been outstanding result. When both duplessis forwards are fit and the angry warthog at 2 – it’s a good sharks pack. I’d take both du plessis forwards Dan and JLDP to RWC.
