Match Report – Sharks beat Blue Bulls to secure semi-final place

The Sharks secured their place in the semi-finals with a great win over the Blue Bulls at Loftus beating them 48-40.

The Sharks started their match against the Blue Bulls knowing they needed a bonus point to secure a spot in the playoffs above Province.

They made most of the play in the opening exchanges of the match making better use of the ball in hand.

With the Sharks putting the first points on the board it was the Blue Bulls with the first try of the match taking the lead 7-0.

The Sharks came back with another penalty but it was the Blue Bulls that were getting their points in tries when they went over for their second one.

This took their lead to 14-6 after 21 minutes.

The Sharks got their first try to make it a one point game but the Blue Bulls hit back immediately with a try from Libbok to extend the lead again.

The Blue Bulls could not kick a ball out and Fassi took the gab to send Jacques Vermeulen over to make it a one point game again.

The Blue Bulls then got a major blow with Kotze being send off with a red card for a dangerous high shoulder tackle to the neck.

It was stupid from Kotze which open the door for the Sharks to go hard for the win.

The Sharks took full advantage of the extra man and sending Esterhuizen over for another try just before halftime.

That gave the Sharks the lead going into the break 27-21.

The second half started well for the Sharks as Ward got over from a little grabber kick through to extend their lead.

The Sharks were scoring at will now and extended the lead to 41-21 with another try from the men from Durban.

The Blue Bulls did came back at the Sharks not giving up until the end scoring two quick tries before the Sharks scored another try.

With minutes to go the Blue Bulls scored their last try to make the final score 48-40 in favour of the visitors.

This secure a semi-final spot for the defending champions next week against the Free State Cheetahs.
