Match Report – Stormers win arm wrestle against Bulls

The Stormers came out winners in an arm wrestle at Newlands on Saturday when they beat the Bulls 24-23.

The fist ten minutes was frantic stuff from both sides with both having opportunities to get on the board.

It was the Stormers with the better chance when the referee had to go to the TMO to see if it was a try for the home side. TMO decision was that Herschel Jantjies knocked the ball on the ground.

They did get that first try not long after when Petersen got over in the corner as the Stormers spread the ball wide.

This gave them a 7-0 lead early on. The Stormers seemed to have had most of the ball and put huge pressure on the Bulls in their own half.

With the Bulls working hard at ruck time they forced a penalty which Pollard kicked over to put them on the board.

Then came Willemse with his brilliant vision and showed off some steps to get away in his own twenty two to send Senatla over for the Stormers second try.

The Bulls enjoyed some time in the Stormers twenty and forced another penalty which Pollard kicked over to reduce the lead to 14-6.

Pollard kicked his third penalty over just before halftime to give the Stormers only a 14-9 lead at the break.

Great start to the second half for the Bulls as they get their first try of the match to take the lead 16-14

The next ten minutes was an arm wrestle between the two sides and it was Stander that broke the deadlock when he kicked a penalty for the lead again.

The Stormers then got some magic form Leyds who snapped through the Bulls defence to offload to Jantjies for their third try.

This gave them a 24-16 lead.

There was enough chances for the Bulls but they made some crucial wrong decisions and seemed to get white-line fever every time they got close.

With a last penalty from Pollard missing the Stormers tried to run from their own line and a kick forward was taken by the Bulls to send Libbok over for that crucial loosing bonus point.

At the end the Stormers got a 24-23 win at Newlands with the Bulls coming away with a loosing bonus point.
