New midfield pair for Springboks

Four changes to the Springbok side that lost to the Pumas in Salta. Damian de Allende and Lionel Mapoe have nbeen dropped, with the latter on the bench. The introduction of Juan de Jongh and Jesse Kriel means the Springboks will have to go to battle with an untested combination.

There is a swap at tighthead prop with Trevor Nyakane coming on the bench and Sharks prop Lourens Adriaanse moving from the bench into the squad. The latter a strong scrummager who may not be as mobile as the Saracens bound man but will provide adequate cover in the latter parts of the game.

Francois Houggard comes in for the injured Ruan Combrinck to complete the changes. The Springboks will also go in with a 6-2 split on the bench and fans can anticipate a forward wrestle.

Franco Mostert is also added to the Springbok bench.

Eben Etzebeth will also celebrate 50 caps and become the youngest South African to achieve the feat.

Springbok team: 1. Beast Mtawarira 2. Adriaan Strauss 3. Lourens Adriaanse 4. Eben Etzebeth 5. Lood de Jager 6. Francois Louw 7. Oupa Mohoje 8. Warren Whiteley 9. Faf de Klerk 10. Elton Jantjes 11. Francois Houggard 12. Juan de Jongh 13. Jesse Kriel 14. Bryan Habana 15. Johann Goosen

  1. So many Questions!

Could a loss here be Brexit-like for Rugby Union in Australia?

Would an SA loss bring demands by SARU for coaching staff to be drug tested?

Will a loss incur so-much-desperation that losing side will not take full responsibility & instead somehow blame Vladamir Putin/Russian hackers?

Who is calling the RW game – Bunny or BC ?

  2. @Americano: We doing things together these days Americano…

A few changes in backline…would like to see how Kriel and JDJ will go but do we really change your midfield in test rugby?

Hope for AC it comes off but at least we have JDJ that can tackle not like Damien who try to tackle.

  3. What is AC counting on his fingers? Number of arseholes in team? Kotsenswaardig to see Mof Steyn, SloFlo, Strauss, Lood, Kriel there. Whatever.

  4. Hoessit, Tjops.

Meh, can’t say this midfield makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside. Look, we know the last one was broken but no need to ‘broke’ it even further!! Jesse Kriel did fairly well at 13 but then he faded. I believe his preferred and best position is 15 so not sure what AC is trying to accomplish here. JdJ won’t let you down but I sincerely doubt he’s out answer @ 12. Guess we’ll just have to see how it goes.

Also wonder how Hougaard will fit back in. I think he’s better at wing than s/h, hope he can take on were Combrinck left off.

Looks like we’re stuck with Bikini until the EOYT. Unless he gets injured first….one can only hope. Not sure why AC is persisting with Flo, apart from that backhand pass it just seems like he lost his mojo.

  5. Last thing: Oupa. Don’t question his energy, drive & commitment but he HAS to work on keeping it low. Incredibly lucky to not have been carded/cited (or both!) in that last game!! I count 8 or 9 above the shoulders and at least a couple choke holds in the attached clip from Rugbydump.

C’mon man, sort that sh!t out.

  6. Yessus oupa looks good I take back what I said. If he can play with that aggression but tackle lower and start carrying stronger – could be damn good. Some serious hits there. Good workrate too.

  7. @cab: \

He won’t despite his heart and high but work-rate he is not even a Super Rugby blind-sider… plain truth.

    Game-plan, break-down, basics, technical problems aside…

A ‘decent’ (not test quality) 13 playing 12 (who looked slow in 7’s) and no distribution, a 15 playing 13 (with a brand new inside centre), Worcester’s 9 playin wing (who looked slow in 7’s), a 15 that’s not settled, a LH playing back-up TH the list goes on… couldn’t be bothered myself… Jake White was saying if politics and poor decisions continue he gives the Boks 4-5 years before they’re past the point of no return… I think he’s being generous.

  8. Bryce-
Where did you see Jake White say this?
***Jake White was saying if politics and poor decisions continue he gives the Boks 4-5 years before they’re past the point of no return***

This is big news – I did not know The Great White commented like this on SA.

  9. If Jake White says the above this cranks the urgency for AC.
Him & his crew need to get their giddy-up on fast as this season thus far has been a horror movie.

  10. Dont think the changes to our backline will make a huge diffenrence. I am however really glad to see JdJ in there. He is not an attacking wizard, but he organises defence really well. Makes up for inefficiency of Elton and hoepfully mistakes that Kriel tends to make in 13 channel. Our defense will surely be better this weekend. I feel for Mapoe, who has not been given a decent run, as I dont believe De Allende did him any favours. But Kriel and JdJ has been given the oppertunity to shine, make us proud!

I hope the pack trained and trained and trained this week. We need aggression at rucktime and we need them to clear and hunt like beasts. 100% commited to pushing anything with a yellow shirt out of the game, nullify pooper and game is 60% won in my mind.

Come on Boks, you can do this. Give us some hope.

  11. We are FUBAR.

Fifth game and AC is already doing what all under pressure coaches in their third year do. Losing all perspective and going for old conservative tried and tested combinations that they personally know will work because it did for them provincially or did for previous national coaches.

    Mallett did
    Viljoen did
    Straueli did
    White did
    De Villiers did
    Meyer did

Usually in their third or fourth year.

This fool is doing it already…

The National Team will lose and be the new Vroteas

  12. Rob Houwing is not entirely my cup of tea, but I think he is spot-on with this:
“But if (Mapoe)has had a raw deal, even worse applies to Vincent Koch, the explosive tighthead prop who, only two matches after he provided major value at Nelspruit, suddenly finds himself surplus to match-day requirements entirely. Instead Lourens Adriaanse, though seldom regularly commanding the Sharks’ No 3 jersey since his switch there from Bloemfontein three seasons back, has earned a dubiously meteoric rise to a maiden start – he is nothing like as effective as Koch as a ball-carrier and even his scrumming, frankly, may be earning stronger salutes from some sources than he actually warrants.” Specifically the latter bit – I am confused that punters suddenly think this idiot can scrum????

  13. @bryce_in_oz:

Although it has been a while, Juan de Jongh was part of one of the better centre partnerships in 2010 for the Stormers, when he ran out at 12 and Jaque Fourie was at 13. De Villiers was in Ireland for that season. They played in the Super 14 final against the Bulls after looking great the whole season.

De JOngh is a very good player, unfortunately I feel very sorry for him, at times when he has been playing his best rugby, for some reason Bok coaches ignored him. He played some good rugby in 2012 / 2013 as well, but Heyneke felt he needed to convert a wing, a fullback and an inside centre to outside instead of picking De Jongh or In 2014 / 2015 picking Mapoe.

  14. Bekke

Very much agree with you. Got no idea why Koch is being switched out – he’s one of our few star players. lourebse isn’t even vaguely in his league.

  15. Well, at least AC is consistent: he replaced a 12 who never passed with another 12 who never passes.

  16. A loss will be worse for Aus than for SA. We’re kind of expecting it.

But nothing in rugby is foreever. Teams tend to bounce back faster than you can say Fire the Coach.

  18. Timeo –
I’m glad you posted twice because your comments were that-
It’s like the diff between war happening to Russians vs like Western Europe or something.
Russians just see it as free landscaping where Euros would see it as all sorts of awful.
Perhaps that in itself is bad sign? I dunno.
I think Aus losing will go down in their rugby union history as the night of long knives & everyone associated….is guilty.
Who will be left to pick up the pieces?
Probably only Andrew Walker & Bryce for God’s sake – will be the only ones spared. It’ll be up to those two to recreate Rugby Union down there in the image of….

  19. @Timeo: Right – the Aussies and their coach are up against it! If they lose this one its 7 losses in a row for Cheika and his not so merry men They were poor against the AB’s both home and away, with lineouts in particular a setpiece weakness.

The Boks need more belief from their supporters. Yes they have only won one of the 8 or 9 games they have played in Brisbane but just look at that reserve lock pairing of PSD and the impressive Franco Mostert. Cheika would give a lot to have quality like that in his run on team let alone on the bench. We have the depth of players across the park and must not stand back – stick it to them Boks.

  20. Ek sien die Skewe Beeld se hoof opskrif was

    Alistair straf swak skakels

  21. @DavidS:

Exactly, and now Coetzee is doing the same, dropping the inform centre in 2015 / 2016 after pairing him with a guy at inside who has been so out of form he has attempted only 8 tackles so far in the Championship of which he missed 5. crazy

  22. If Australia beat us Alistair will be very close to fucked…
If he then loses home games he’ll be totalled.

Ohhh heavens one can wish and dream…

Although in South Africa that will mean they will appoint the Spears’ head coach as the national side’s head coach

  23. Should have changed the Springbok name when I asked 6years ago.
Since then we have only contributed to taint a name of legend.
    Pathetic .
Took em 10 years to admit our basic skills are pisspoor.

  24. belief?
    More belief from their supporters??
Losing against Japan and Argentina -scraping against the Europeans?
    Fuck off.
