The Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer made just two changes as he named a familiar side to take on the Argentinians. Having suffered defeat earlier in the year, a battle to finish at least third at the World Cup and on the official rankings Meyer was quick to replace Fourie du Preez with Ruan Pienaar and Rudy Paige was added to the bench. Victor Matfield comes into the stating line up and is handed the arm band. He swaps with Lood de jager. I see the value in the side winning this game to end the side’s year on a high. What is telling is in the bigger scope of thing Meyer has sent messages of a lack of trust, belief and courage to not only make changes but to believe in the abilities of the players.

I am in awe as the World Cup and the potential end of some careers and players like Siya Kolisi , Lwazi Mvovo and are not trusted. In some way Meyer is sending a different message. You are not good enough and you were a selection that was forced upon. It really is sad and while he has already secured a four year deal, well reportedly he has shown stubbornness, blindness and continues to not only make his position fragile among the fans. Meyer states that ringing the changes would be a lack of respect to the jersey. So the other Springboks are not worth the honor of donning the jersey?

Meyer is a loyalist and will be going all out for bronze. It will be a result, if he wins that will make his win percentage even better but in perspective it will be another dry and unsuccessful four years. Something is wwrong in the South African system and maybe it is time to look else where. It has been a poor habit of ours but if the coach only trusts 16-20 players only in a squad of 30 or better yet in five franchises there is a problem.

We wish the Springboks all the best and may they prevail. A second loss to the Pumas would bring mixed emotions, however it is important to note the mental state of the players that have lost a semi final earlier in the week. It would have made sense to start with players who have had little game time but will be motivated to get some minutes but to also prove a point. Meyer knows best, he is a national coach anyway.

  1. What a disappointment. Get rid of this coach. He could have started with the number two's and have them replaced by half time if need be.
    Same team, same shit.

  2. At least he cannot blame anyone or anything when they lose on Friday – his hero is leading the team after all.

  3. What a disappointment. Get rid of this coach. He could have started with the number two’s and have them replaced by half time if need be.
    Same team, same shit.

  4. I agree with him picking what he considers his best team. I don’t see a reason to question that this team was picked other then on good faith.

If Mvovo or Kolisi are forced quotas then I would not pick them either if I had a better player to pick from. Kolisi is a quality player but he is very lucky to be there over Kriel or Brussouw.

I guess your point is that we need to build a bigger squad with more experience and give fringe players a chance. I can get onboard with that line of reasoning. But not in a World Cup, even if its a 3rd place playoff.

  5. @Sasori: dead rubber game? You are showing a lack of trust in that squad and it is good we failed to win WC. It just means its a split squad. Simple. Some are there to make numbers. From what I see he holds grudges and is naive.

  6. @Sasori: Steyn dropped from side since that missed kick for touch. Mvovo and Kolisi are not good enough in his scope as for Brits. He needs a third choice hooker . Numbers.

  7. How can one call this dead rubber as this is a third place in WC and if Meyer lose this with a second string I do not even know how much certain people will love that.

This is an important match to win…but ye does not matter trying to explain that

    I give up

  8. #ARG make nine changes to their starting XV to face #RSA on Friday, with @NicoFSanchez leading #LosPumas #RSAvARG . Nine! They are bold enough to do that and deserve to lose the game!!

  9. @Jacques (Bunny):

What is the relevance of this game? It counts for nothing, has no bearing on seating for next world cup, does not add any value, so how is it not a dead rubber? Argentina seems to not think much of it, ABs did not think much of it in 1999, hell I can’t even remember who won it in 2011.

  10. Disrespect for the jersey?
The best example is sending a player up with less than a few minutes to go. Like Serfontein replacing Die Ellende with less than one minute to the whistle.
Nobody has succeeded in explaining this kind of shit to me, not even the media manager.

  11. Meyer: “I don’t know if it’s Victor’s last game, maybe he’ll go another 4 years.”I truly believe we gave everything. The margins are small, hopefully we brought some joy to the country.”Meyer says there was temptation to ring the changes but out of respect to the jersey they had to pick the strongest possible team.

  12. Lack of Trust?
    Disrespect to the Jersy?
This coming from the poepol who lost against Japan ??
We played 12 minutes of rugby in the World Cup and the media arse lickers would have us believe that the shite dished up ,paid for by us,was indeed cake?
The South African public is as much to blame as our pathetic display on the pitch.
We let corrupt politicians ,incompetent administrators and mediocre players with non existent ball skills live like kings on our hard earned money.
    Wake up.
Don’t spend another sent and within two years the whole fucking joke of
will be on its financial knees.

  13. @Duiwel: I don’t think it is the general “public” – SponsDoring has his bunch of groupies, mainly from Tswane and some confused lost souls thinking he is somehow linked to some Afrikaner / Dutch Reformed Church agenda, and any attack on him is an attack on them. And then of course his paid fan base, who throw whatever stat they can find at us (the wider public). Unfortunately, he has build up quite a media fan base – who create bucket loads of garbage to tell us a coach will need 8 (!!!!!!) years to do something.
