Sharks sign Du Preez to tie him down in Durban

With the rumours flying around that Bulls coach is in search of some quality players the Sharks have confirmed that they have signed their Springbok Jean-Luc Du Preez.

The flank was on Mitchell list of players he was looking to pull to the capital for next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Mitchell has struggled in his first year in charge of the Bulls ending last in the South African conference.

According to recent media reports, the New Zealander had requested R90 million from the Gauteng side’s board to lure young Du Preez to the Pretoria outfit, while also showing his interest in Springboks Duane Vermeulen (unattached), Schalk Brits (unattached), Frans Malherbe (Stormers) and Junior Boks star Wandisile Simelane (Golden Lions).

But in an interview with The Witness, Sharks communications manager Novashni Chetty confirmed that Du Preez was staying in Durban.

Seems like Micthell will need to go look elsewhere for players now

  1. Well there goes another one Mitchell was gunning for. Both Brink and du preez gone.

  2. No brainer… why would he leave a franchise that is currently developing their exciting youngsters, for another where the head coach is threatening to leave if his monetary demands are not met because cannot develop his youngsters…

  3. @bryce_in_oz: A bit hard on Mitch there Bryce….He did not sign the youngsters and everyone knows the problem Bulls have with Xander guy.

I do not like his style in buying a super team bit one need to understand his point of view with the shit they did the past two years in buying and letting players go.

I can remember them not renewing experience players because Van Rensberg bought almost the whole SA Schools team.

Bulls and Stormers have now idea of recruiting nor keeping the balance of experience and good youngsters

  4. @Jacques:

Not harsh at all. As I said in the lengthy post to Aldo on the other thread which got wiped a few days ago.

To suggest he inherited a crap squad is bollocks… take one look at it. A 48 man extended squad including around 35 players in their 2nd and 3rd year of SR, with an average age of only 24, including around 25 players that have test caps, have represented the Bok ‘A’ side and some of the best young talent to have represented the South Africa U20’s. That is a pretty damn decent base squad to start any career off to. He came last and instead of knuckling down and developing the squad on top of a few purchases/transfers, he made excuses about them and he’s holding the club to ransom with ‘give me more money to buy more players or else I walk’.

Compare that to the actions of JW at the Brumbies, a club at the time at their all time lows and how he built that squad literally pre-season with no extra funding but smart talent scouting and the rest but then there’s no real need to repeat those accomplishments.

IT was no different at the Lions… take one look at the base squad Mitchell ‘inherited’ all the way back in 2011. Pat Cilliers, CJ Van de Linde, JC JVRensburg, Wickus Van Heerden, Michael Rhodes, Derrick Minnie, Baywatch Grobelaar, Franco VDM, Josh Strauss… the list goes on before we even get to the likes of Kriel, Whiteley, Cronje, Jantjies et al.

You mention bad signings… perhaps Mitchell was their poorest signing yet?
