TiaanLiebenbergFormer Stormers and Western Province hooker Tiaan Liebenberg may yet be playing rugby again as he is looking at the possibility to come out of retirement.

Liebenberg, 34 retired from the game in 2014 after he picked up a back injury playing for Western Province. He decided to call it a day and went back to Bloemfontein. According to Netwerk24, Liebenberg is considering a return to the game after he got a phone call from his old team-mate Vermeulen.

Vermeulen went under the knife just before the World Cup last year and urge Liebenberg to do the same and see specialist, Stephan Joubert who also operated on players like Willem Alberts and Bismarck Du Plessis. Liebenberg was also inspired by listening to his former Western Province and Stormers Captain, Jean De Villiers on a TV interview which was enough to inspire the hooker who played five test for the Springboks.

Liebenberg was operated on in October last year and is currently in training and if he passes fitness over the next few weeks, he may be pulling a Cheetah jersey over his head soon.

Liebenberg joined Western Province in 2006 from Griquas and played eight years for them

  1. Sharks can cut some dead wood like Hadebe/Odwa/Chadwick/Murray/Wandile/Chavanga and buy Tiaan and another ‘quality’ hooker/prop…

    Wow Bryce.
The cavalier-ness on display regarding the C-Cell players that are in your opinion suspect makes me wanna wash. No Bryce actiually it makes me wanna scrub.

Now I don’t know half the fellas you mentioned BUT the temerity of yours on display is loathesome

I’m a big fan of Tanderi Chavanga. IN MY OPINION no SA player has exemplified the gate of a real life Springbok in nature. Yeah he’s been out-a-while but Tiann Liedenberg has retired. By his own previous admission that dog won’t hunt. Let-it Go.

I ( unlike Bryce obviously ) am enthused by the C-Cells this year. Yeah, a boat anchor around their necks is Smit – but what ya gonna do….
To malign the other C-Cells prior to their campaign in support of an outstanding Stormers player having second thoughts is beneath you.

Bottomline is you have no clue the greatness that can be achieved by them hanging with the SunKing. He is the Bowie of rugby union & dar it Bryce – why do I have to spoon feed this to you?

Just chill. You don’t have to go out on a limb to be gruff & bonzer like Australian types. Rise above. It’s easy & its the Christian thing to do.

  3. @Americano:

Those I have listed are not worth re-instating this season plain and simple… collectively their wages could have bought two quality players where they are desperately needed… prop/hooker/lock or 9/10 (I won’t even start on the crap surplus at 9 after Claasens/Reinach…

Monde- wanted him to step up but he is too weak across the paddock…
Wandile- was excited to see if he had grown out of his deficiencies with a stint OS… nope…
Odwa- nothing can take away from what he has contributed (albeit much hair has been pulled during his career)… but he is two seasons too long in the tooth…
Chadwick- what more can one say… he is shite and has never reached any potential in how many seasons now…
Murray… well another like Chadwick and Monde from my Alma Mater that I take no pleasure in criticizing… but jeez I find it hard to say anything positive about the journeyman’s ‘game’

And I can carry on with the likes of Esterhuizen/Cooper/Hoffman/McDuling et al et al and many more who are simply not Super rugby ‘winning’ players…

Cut the deadwood… quality not quantity…

    More WLR’s/Potgieters and Ruan Botha’s…
