Varsity Cup Final – Back-to-back title wins for Maties

Maties had broke the record books on Monday when they won the Varsity Cup for the fifth time.

It was also back to back championship wins for the men from Stellenbosch when they beat FNB Tuks 34-12.

They were in control of the scoreboard form the start to the end outplaying Tuks.

Johann van Niekerk and Hartzenberg got two tries each which came every time just when they needed it. Tuks brought the aggression which had Maties on the back foot a few times.

They were very unlucky not to get points on the board in that first half with just the finishing missing at crucial stages.

Maties with two tries in the first half led 12-0 at the break and it was still everyones game.

In the set pieces the team were more or less even with massive defence form both side from minute 1 to minute 80.

Tuks did came back with two tries in the second half by Dewald Naude which started a comeback from the visitors.

With all the momentum at this stage with Tuks the game turned again when Vaughen Isaacs was send off with a red card for a dangerous tackle.

It was sad to see the fullback go off in a final but it was the right call.

With two penalties to the home side Maties extended the lead and a late try by Munier Hartzenberg sealed the win for Maties.

Chait and Smit was outstanding for Maties all season and had another special game, especially Smith who took control with his vision of the game.

At the end Maties had just too much for Tuks on the night and took the trophy in front of a passionate crowed.
