WP Rugby President Thelo Wakefield has hinted that they do not want Springbok Vermeulen back at WP Rugby.
He spoke to Netwerk24 and although it was speculated that Vermeulen will join the Stormers when he return from France Wakefield suggested something else.
Wakefield suggests otherwise saying the WPRU will not offer Vermeulen a contract for the 2018 season and no decision has been made beyond that time-frame.
‘We have to prepare Juarno (Augustus) for the Bok team. How can we achieve that if he doesn’t get game-time? We also have to allow Nizaam Carr back into the team to continue the excellent form he showed during his stint at Wasps,’ Wakefield told Netwerk24.com.
He added Vermeulen might be considered if there are injuries to the Stormers’ loose forward stocks.
‘We must send out the right message. We are often criticised for failure to hold onto our youngsters because we contract older players from elsewhere. We must start focusing on the development of our on players.’
This is the same president that have seen so many youngsters go to other franchises and become Springboks who suddenly have a problem getting Vermeulen, who could well be the next Springbok Captain, a place at the union.
The same Wakefield who has just now contracted Sergeal Petersen (Cheetahs), Raymond Rhule (Cheetahs), JJ Engelbrecht (Shuttles) but see it fit to leave out promising player Craig Barry.
The quicker Wakefield goes fulltime to SARU the better it will be it seems for WP Rugby in a whole.
