Whiteley back to lead Lions against Sharks


Swys de Bruin has named his team to face the Cell C Sharks in Saturdays first match in this years Super Rugby competition.

Jacques van Rooyen will run out will run out in his 50th Vodacom Super Rugby game.

Van Rooyen was invited to train with the Lions in 2012 after catching the eye while in action for a club team in Pretoria and has since cemented his place in the squad, even captaining the side during the Currie Cup in 2017.

The Emirates Lions welcomed back their Blitzbok Kwagga Smith who will don the number six jumper in the absence of the injured Jaco Kriel.

Youngster Aphiwe Dyantyi gets his first taste of Super Rugby at wing, filling the big shoes of injured wing Courtnall Skosan while Sylvian Mahuza steps up to the plate at right wing.

Another youngster, Hacjivah Dayimani, has been included on the bench and loan player Marnus Schoeman (Pumas) will also warm the bench. Should they take the field, both will make their Super Rugby debut for the Emirates Lions.

The side will be led by the experienced Warren Whiteley.

  1. No 9 or 10 cover on the bench. Hope neither of cronje or Elton gets injured, otherwise it could spell early trouble for Lions

  2. Mnisi and Janse Van Rensburg could wreak havoc later on. Bit worried about the wings though. Both are Orcs to use the terminology Bryce likes. Sevens players. Very fast but not physical players. So happy for Marnus Schoeman. Man is workhorse at the Pumas. Hope he gets noticed by Rassie. Dayumani is another Kwagga Smith loose forward.

  3. Could be exciting to see Janse Van Rensburg and Esterhuizen run at other. Clash of the Titans.

    Two big units those guys.
