Rugby Championship – Springboks start with bonus point against Argentina

It was not pretty but the Springboks outscore Argentina with three tries to nothing in a test match that saw both team making plenty of mistakes and giving away penalties throughout.

The Springboks never really looked like loosing this one but one could see that this team have not really spend time on the field together as it felt disjointed throughout.

They had the better of Argentina in the kicking game which gave them great field position and attacking opportunities.

The Springboks put pressure on the Argentinians early on and forced a penalty which Elton Jantjies kicked over to give them the lead.

The first 10 minutes went into a kicking contest with both teams trying to get field position to attack from but neither able to execute properly.

The Springboks then got two quick tries by Reinach and Fassi in-between a penalty by Nicolás Sánchez to extend their lead to 15-3.

First it was Cobus who took full advantage form a Argentina mistake to ran a full 50 meters try and their second cane from a high kick which Etzebeth got back and Jantjies founded Fassi with his cross-kick to score a brilliant try in the corner.

That also ensured that the Springboks came away with a bonus point win from this game.

Jantjies knocked another penalty to take the score to 18-3.

The game got a bit loose again with the Springboks making a few errors that gave Argentina some time on the ball to force a penalty which Nicolás Sánchez knocked over.

Jantjies extended the lead immediately again after the restart but with the Springboks under pressure they gave another penalty away with Sanchez happy to knocked it over.

That send the teams into halftime with the Springboks leading 21-9.

Argentina put all the pressure on the Springboks early on the second half and forced a penalty which reduce the lead tp 21-12.

Jantjies got that three back with a penalty scrum the Springboks got after Marx and Koch came on the field.

The Springboks kicking game was much better but handling errors killed any momentum they got form it. They did manage to get back in Argentina half and Jantjies boot added another three points to the score.

With a great attacking lineout it was a great run form Van Standen who setup the break to the left which saw Jaden Hendrikse go over for his first try in test rugby.

Argentina had a late chance to get a try but could not get pass the Springboks defence which left gave the Springboks their first win in the Championship.

Springboks: Tries – Cobus Reinach, Aphelele Fassi, Jaden Hendrikse Conversions – Elton Jantjies Penalties – Elton Jantjies(4)

Argentina: Penalties – Nicolás Sánchez(4)

That leaves the All Blacks and Springboks both on 5 log points after round 1
