Castle Lager Rugby Championship – Springboks take second win over Argentina


Again not the best but the Springboks managed again to beat Argentina easily at the end on Saturday 29-3.

The were a few patches of some good play by both sides but the momentum was never there with just too many penalties specially by Argentina in their own twenty two.

The Springboks got the scoreboard ticking over with Pollard boot in the first half and only manage to get over in the second half with a couple of tries.

It was Argentina that showed their hand first with some good handling to put pressure on the Boks.

Argentina was doing well at ruck time and had two early penalties form the ruck as the Boks struggled to clean out.

The Springboks got in the Argentinian twenty two and put huge pressure on them with their maul which resulted in a warning from the referee to the visitors. With the penalty Pollard put the first points on the board for the Springboks.

The Springboks loss Trevor Nyakane early with an ankle injury which saw Kitshoff coming on much earlier than expected.

The Springboks scrum was looking good and they forced another penalty form it which Pollard extend the lead to 6-0 after 17 minutes.

Both teams were playing the territory game to attack form but mistakes cost both when they did get into the red zones.

Argentina got on the board with a penalty to make it 9-3 for the Springboks. The Springboks had the better of the ball and territory which kept Argentina with defending their line.

Argentina kept on giving away penalties when the Springboks setup lineouts to maul and Pollard was happy to kick those penalties over.

The referee finally had enough of the penalties from Argentina and send Rodrigo Bruni off with a yellow card. Pollard kicked the penalty again to extend the Springboks lead to 15-3.

Domingo Miotti got the first opportunity to get points on the board in the second half but missed again to the left. It was in fact the Springboks that scored first through Mapimpi in the corner.

It was great hands by the Boks and it eventually got to the winger who run in a easy try at the end. Pollard converted the try which gave the Springboks a 22-3 lead.

The second try did not take long with Argentina again giving away a penalty which setup a maul for the Springboks and Marx was at the end of it.

Pollard again converted the try to extend the Springboks lead to 29-3.

The Springboks had plenty off problems with their lineouts throughout the test which was strange to see.

Argentina had their best opportunity with twenty minute left in the game as they setup a good maul but spill it close to the line. It was a good period for Argentina having a bit more ball in hand but the Springboks defence was just too good for them to get pass.

A late tackle on Jaden Hendrikse saw him driven off with the golf cart which saw Kolbe move to nine and the Springboks playing with only 14 men.

Argentina had the final say when Pablo Matera went over from close range after they never gave up and with a few penalties got to the Springboks line.

That was the last points in the test match with the Springbok getting another win over Argentina but without the bonus point.
