URC 2021/22 – Vodacom Bulls

The Bulls have been carrying the South African flag since we came out of hard lockdown in September last year winning every trophy that they could grab their hands on.

The only one that escape them was the North v South Rainbow Cup final against Benetton who beat them hands down. That loss send out a stern warning to the South African franchises and public that it is not going to be easy going into the URC.

Under Jake White the Bulls has evolve into a complete team who knows how to play a running game but can also pull it a bit back and play the 10-man game as well.

The most impressive aspect of the Bulls this past year is that even when they have an off day they still manage to win games.

The URC will test them but they are South African best hope in the competition at this moment.

Jake White has picked a 37-man squad which includes the newly signed former Springbok hooker Bismarck du Plessis. Du Plessis joined the Bulls earlier this month to add some great experience to the squad which will be priceless going into Europe.

The squad also sees the impressive Johan Goosen back in the squad after he missed the Bulls last match due to COVID. Another Springbok, Embrose Papier has also recovered from injury and was included into the group.

The Bulls will start their campaign against one of the best teams in Europe on Saturday, the Irish club Leinster. This will test the Bulls and will give Jake White a good indication where his players is at right now.

From Leister the Bulls move on too Connacht before the going over to Wales to face Cardiff and the last match on this tour for them will be against Edinburgh in Scotland.

White said that playing in the URC will improve SA players and they as a squad looking forward to the challenge. As all the other SA Franchises, the Bulls will also start this competition without their Springboks which will test the depth of SA Rugby fully.

With some great experience in the Bulls side White believes that he has just the right mix in the squad for the youngsters to quickly adopt to the higher level teams they will face in Europe.
