URC – Great News as URC give green light for SA to host home games

Despite the reports last week that SA teams will have to play their home games next month in Italy, conformation came today that they will in fact play them in South Africa

The tournament organisers confirmed on Friday that the Stormers, Bulls, Lions and Sharks will host round 6 and 7 at their home venues.

This comes after there was some unhappy fans last week when reports surface that these games will be played in Italy.

This was the backup plan because South Africa was on the UK red travel list, which they were take off last week by Britain.

Since South Africa was removed from this travel ban list a lot has been done in the background to ensure the four franchises are ready to host their northern partners.

SA Rugby CEO, Jurie Roux said that planning to play the four SA teams ‘home matches’ in Europe was a step they had to take in the chaos of tel he pandemic but he is very happy that they could manage to proof they can stage the games for Euro teams and he is happy to welcome them to South Africa.

This comes after government has approved limited spectators at the stadiums last week as well.

CEO of the URC, Martin Anayi said this is a great result not just for South Africa but also the league who can go and test themselves against the SA teams in South Africa.

He said huge credit must go to the South Africa government, SA Rugby and the leadership within the franchise to push through and provide reassurances for these fixtures to be played at their home venues in such a short space of time.

The teams that will be travelling in November are Zebre, Scarlets, Munster and Cardiff.

They will play two tour matches back-to-back.
