The DHL Stormers got that win they were after on Friday when they beat the Dragons 24-10. It was a close contest right to the end with the Dragons leading for the better part of the 80 minutes.
Eventually it was two tries by Zas late in the game that sealed it for the Stormers. The Dragons defended for most part of the second half as the Stormers control possession and territory. At the end it was a well deserved win for the men from Cape Town and something to build on for their home leg of the competition.
The game started with some high pace shown by both teams trying to speed up the game. There was some nice touches by the Dragons and Stormers early on, but it was the Stormers through Libbok that put the first points on the board with a penalty.
A controversial yellow card for Moerat was given which gave the Dragons an extra man on the field and this put the visitors under Mense pressure. That pressure resulted in the first try of the match by Lewis from a little kick through the Stormers defence.
That gave the home side the lead for the first time in the match. They extended that lead minutes later with a penalty from Davies.
With both teams trying to break defences down could not manage more than two penalties by Libbok which made it a one point game at halftime.
The Stormers came out firing in the second half pressing the Dragons back into their own half living them to defend their line but handling errors cost the visitors any chance of getting over the Dragons line.
The Stormers kept the pressure on and were playing most of the first ten minutes of the second half in the Dragons twenty two forcing penalties which the Stormers did not went for points.
Penalty after penalty with no card to the Dragons the Stormers eventually got over when Gelant put a little kick through the Dragons defence for Zas to pick up and score the visitors first try of the match.
The Dragons had to come at the Stormers to try and get back in the game but another penalty form Libbok saw them go into a seven point lead. The Dragons had one last time to get a try and pushed the Stormers hard but a turnover in the Stormers twenty two saw the Zas kick the ball down field and chase well. The Dragons messed up gathering the ball and it was Zas that went over for his second of the match.
With time up Libbok kicked the conversion to gave the Stormers their first win of the season.
