Champions Cup – Saints and Racing starts exciting Champions Cup


The European Champions Cup was supposed to start on Friday with Bristol v Scarlets but due to COVID protocals Scarlets was unable to field a full team which resulted in Bristol getting the points.

That means the first Champions Cup match for the season will be between Northampton hosting Racing 92 on Friday

It will be a massive clash to start the season when teh Saints host Racing 92 at Franklin’s Garden in Round 1 this Friday evening.

The Saints will aim at their first win over the Top 14 side with the last four meetings between the two sides ended up with Racing getting three wins with one draw. Racing lost at the quarter final satge last season but is not a side that are losing back-to-back matches in the competition.

The last meeting in 2015 ended in a 9-9 draw. The Saints record against French sides in the competition is not that bad having loss two of the last 12 home matches.

Former All Black Matt Proctor will be starting for Northampton in the opener. He replace Hutchinson who drops to the bench. We also see Auterac and Ratuniyarawa coming in teh front row and second row in teh other two changes.

Lawes was left out for this one due to an enforced rest week. The side will be led by Ludlam with Augustus next to him in the back row. Wood returns to the side on the bench after he recoverd from injury.

Racing 92: Beale; Thomas, Vakatawa, Fickou (c), Imhoff; Russell, Machenaud; Gogichashvili, Baubigny, Oz; Jones, Le Roux; Diallo, Lauret, Tanga.

Replacements: Chat, Ben Arous, Gomes Sa, Bresler, Chouzenoux, Gibert, Chavancy, Taofifenua.
