Challenge Cup – Winning start for Newcastle and Lyon


The Challenge Cup kicked off on Friday with Newcastle taking on Worcester and Lyon hosting Gloucester. At the end of 80 minutes it was Newcastle and Lyon that pulled it thorugh to get the first win of the new season.

Newcastle had to work hard on Friday night to overcome Worcester at Kingston Park, but manage to secure their opening round win, 31-26 at the end.

They scored within the first minute of the game with Max Wright going over but conceded a penalty try before Scotish International, Duhan van der Merwe got the Warriors ahead.

It was the try of Mike Brown inthe 23 minute that draw Newcastle level again but Doel got over a few minutes later to put the Warriors in the lead again.

A try from Newcastle hooker George McGuigan in the closing moments of the first half saw the two sides go into the break locked at 21-21,

The host took the lead early in the second half with Lindsay-Haugue but yet again Worcester hit back with a try from Chudley. The conversion was not over which kept Newcastle in the lead by two.

Hodgson penalty extended the home side lead which they was able to keep till the end to get the win.

An inexperience Gloucester side came close in beating French side Lyon on Friday night in the second Challenge Cup match of the weekend.At the end the host was good for the 19-13 win to get off to a good start in the competition.

The first half was a tight affair with two penalties from Doussain to the one of Twelvetrees gave the home side the lead at the break. Gloucester level the scores after the break with a penalty from Twelvetrees.

It was Taufua who went over in the second half for the first try of the match to put the host in the lead. Another penalty saw their lead being extended.

Jordan got one for Gloucester in reply which put them right back into the contest but another penalty for the home side saw them extend their lead again and they were able to hold on to that for the win.
