Champions Cup – Chaos reigns in Round 2 of the EPCR

The European Champions Cup and Challenge Cup is in seriouse danger of being lost to the pandemic and the new outbreak in Europe.

The clash between Leinster and Montpellier has been called off already which was supposed to take place on Friday due to positive cases within the Leinster squad. Montpellier was awarded a 28-0 win due to the cancellation which was not sitting well with Leinster and their fans.

In the Challenge Cup Saracens has also forfeited their match against Pau which also give Pau full points for the cancellation of the match.

Now the EPCR are holding their breath after France has banned travel between teh UK and France which puts another two matches in doubt.

There are in total seven matches in doubt but due to the reason that the travel ban only comes into effect on Saturday night the two Sunday games are in real doubt.

Tournament organiseers are currently in discussions with the French authorities over what the new measurements means for the round two matches. Tourism and work are no longer sufficient reasons to travel between the UK and France regardless of vacination status. Only essential travel is allowed in Paris.

Adding to this new regulations, any arrivals from the UK must provide a negative test with the previous 24 hours as well as quarantine in France for seven days, although a frech negative test will reduce this to 48 hours.

This cause plenty of uncertainty for couches, players and staff at the moment.

We will have to wait and see what comes out in teh discussions between EPCR and the French goverment.

“You might end up flying over there, not getting your results until you arrive and then players are ruled out and you are coming all the way back again.
