Carling Currie Cup – 14-man Bulls come back to beat Province at Newlands

Although Province dominate most of the game with ball in hand and playing with 14 men for most of the second half the Bulls came back to beat Western Province 22-20 on Saturday.

Province were playing more with the ball to start off with but could not get that final pass or the hands to get first points in the game.

It was Cornal Hendricks with the perfect break down the middle that open the space for a wide ball to Kurt-Lee Arendse who got over for the first try of the match.

Smith did not convert but the Bulls got an early 5-0 lead.

Province first points came from Willemse when he kicked over a penalty to reduce the lead to only two points after 14 minutes. The scrums was something beautiful as both teams stood strong.

Province created a few opportunities but poor handling let them down as they played most of the first 20 minutes in the Bulls half.

Province kept pressing the Bulls and with Trevor Nyakane off for blood they dominated the scrums as well. It was after a few pick and drive that Augustus finally got over for Province first try and the lead of 10-5.

The Bulls did not have may chances to get in Province half of the field and even less time on the ball.

The first half ended with Province leading the Bulls 10-5.

It was the Bulls that got the first points of the second half with a penalty from Smith to make it a two point game.

The Bulls was given a hard blow when TMO decided that Jacques van Rooyen tackle hit Gelant in the head whereas it more looked a little late against the shoulder.

With the Bulls on attack Ruhan Nel intecept to give Province forward ball and a kick ahead from Willemse was gathered by Davids to score Province second try

The Bulls hit back with a brilliant try after they build up nicely to send Arendse over for his second try of the match. This squared it all up at 15-all.

Province hit back immediately when Nel created space for Ernst van Rhyn to get over and give the home side a 20-15 lead.

The Bulls never gave up even with only fourteen men on the park and from the halfway they worked their way to Province line and with the forwards doing the hard work it was a great cross kick from Smith that send Janse van Vuuren over for the try to even it up at 20-all.

Smith had to kick the conversion to take the lead and he did just that. Province had a last chance to attack but the Bulls defence was too good and the visitors took a great win at Newlands.
