Carling Currie Cup – Sharks on the winning side against Bulls in Durban


The Cell C Sharks finally got a win over the Bulls after being on the loosing side for the last couple of meetings between the two sides.

It was not easy but with a final kick missed by Morne Steyn the Sharks got the win, 32-29 in Durban on Saturday.

With the win the Sharks have kept their number two log position behind the Bulls with Province and the Lions behind them.

The Sharks is only the second side since rugby return after the lock-down that could beat the Bulls under Jake White.

It was a tight affair throughout the match with no one really getting away on the scoreboard but it was the Sharks that led at the break 14-9.

With only penalties getting the scoreboard ticking over it was the Sharks captain, Lukhanyo Am try from a great little pass by Libbok that gave the Sharks the lead.

The Sharks was given a blow when Marius Louw was shown a yellow card for what was deemed a dangerous tackle. It was a bit confusing as the two players hit heads in the tackle.

After looking at the law on dangerous tackles again it was clear that the referee and his TMO made the right decision

Minutes later the Bulls suffered the same faith when Jacques van Rooyen was also send off for a similar tackle according to the TMO.

Both teams got into the game in the second half which made it an enjoyable game to watch.

Bosch extended the lead of the Sharks early in the second half to 17-9 but it was the try from Marco van Staden that opened the game up.

This brought the Bulls right back in the game trailing with only one point behind he Sharks.

With back to back penalties by Steyn the Bulls took the lead back 22-17 with 24 minutes to go. Bosch replied with his fifth penalty of the match.

It was the Bulls to score next again when Hendricks showed some of his class with a great try.

The Sharks replied with tries by Van Vuuren and Penxe to took the lead 32-29 with minutes left on the clock.

The Bulls worked hard to fight their way into the Sharks twenty two and with a great scrum forced a penalty after the hooter sounded bringing Steyn to kick the penalty for a draw.

By all surprise Steyn missed the penalty which gave the Sharks a great win over the log leaders.
