Log leaders Bristol Bears extended their lead in the Premiership when they beat Gloucester 18-17 on Friday.
It was a tight affair throughout the 80 minutes with two late Ioan Lloyd penalties that gave Bristol a one-point win.
The Cherry and Whites is at the bottom of the log, so the announcement on Friday that no relegation will take place this season must have been great news for Gloucester.
It was Byrne who went over for Bristol was an impressive maul to opening the scoring on the night.
Gloucester did hit back with Carreras taking advantage of a poor pass finishing form 50 meters out. The Bears hit back with Heenan to level the scores at the break.
Gloucester restored their lead when Thorley got over straight after the halftime break.
A penalty form Lloyd reduce the lead again to 17-15 with 20 minutes left on the clock. Gloucester looked good for the win until Alex Graig was penalised for a high tackle in the 75 minute.
Lloyd stepped up again and slotted a 40 meter penalty kick to take the lead 18-17 and hold on in the final minutes to take the win and extend their lead at the top over Exeter.
