The Hurricanes gave Gatland Chiefs another defeat on Saturday when they outplayed them with 31-18.
This kept the Hurricanes in the title run with the bonus point win but all the stars align for the Crusaders to secure the title on Sunday morning when they play the Highlanders at home.
The Chiefs had the opportunity to put the first points on the board but McKenzie kick hit the crossbar. The first points came from Peter Umaga-Jensen when he got over for the first try off the match.
It was a brilliant pass to Umaga-Jensen from Perenara that saw him break the tackle to dive over under the post.
Barrett conversion was over which gave the home side a 7-0 lead.
McKenzie got his boot right and did slot over the first points for the Chiefs with a penalty.
But is was again Umaga-Jensen to score for the Hurricanes after some great play between him and Goosen. This extended the Hurricanes lead to 12-3. The conversion was missed by Barrett and the home side went into the break with a good lead.
The Chiefs started the second half well and got rewarded with a try from Sean Wainui. Trask got a great pass away to Wainui in space to put the gas down and score the Chiefs first try.
With McKenzie conversion over the Chiefs reduced the lead to 12-10.
Against the run of play the Hurricane strike back after a break by Perenara with the ball spread wide for Coles to dive over.
This extended the lead for the Hurricanes again to 17-10
McKenzie slotted another penalty over before Van Wyk got over for the the Hurricanes again.
From the lineout Garden-Bachop send the ball out wide with a great kick and the bounce of the ball falls right for Van Wyk to get over.
The Chiefs got another try when Karpik scored from a maul which the Hurricanes had no answers too.
This reduced the lead again to 24-18 but the final say come from the home side whe Booth draws the tackle before he passes to Procter to score his try.
This gave them a 31-18 win over a Chiefs side that can been seen as very unlucky or just not good enough in the competition this time around.
