It was another cracker of a test match on Sunday when Wales came from behind against a 14 men Irish side to take the win to start their 2021 Six Nations campaign.
Although Ireland did most of the play at the start of the test it was Halfpenny that put the first points on the board after Wales forced to penalties to get into Irelands half of the field.
Just as Ireland started to take the ascendancy in the match O’Mahony went in with a shoulder in the face and got a straight red card.
That left Ireland to play with 14-men for 65 min.
It was if the O’Mahony red card sparked the Irish as they did most of the play and kept the Welsh pinned in their own twenty two.
Ireland finally got something to show for all their possession and territory when Sexton kicked over his first penalty of the afternoon to reduce the lead to 6-3.
Sexton did not took long to level the scores after another penalty in the ruck was given against Wales.
Ireland finally broke the Wales defensive line which send Beirne over for the first try of the match and a lead of 13-6.
After the break Wales looked better not just with ball in hand but also stepped up in their set pieces making sure they played in Ireland half.
Wales finally got rewarded when they kept the pressure on and the power by George North gave them their first try of the match. This reduce the lead of Ireland to only two points with 30 minutes left.
With all the possession Wales had to get more points on the board and they did just with a classy finish from their winger Louis Rees-Zammit.
With the conversion from Halfpenny over, Wales retook the lead with 18-13.
Wales kept playing in Irelands half of the field which force Ireland to give away penalties and Halfpenny was happy to extend his side lead with another penalty.
Ireland got some new life into their game with 10 minutes to go and where pressuring Wales hard in their twenty two.
Billy Burns got a penalty over for Ireland to reduce the lead of Wales to only 5 with 8 minutes to go.
Ireland did all they can but at the end did not have enough to get that final points to steal the match. That gave Wales the win and a great start to their campaign.
