It was a typical start of a season game when the Green team took on the Gold team at Newlands on Saturday. There was not not much going on in the first half but at the end the Green team was just too strong and took the win 25-9
There was really not much to write home about that first half with both teams preferring to play a kicking game and try get territory rather than playing the game.
The scrums and ineouts was a mess from the start and never really got going in that first half with first the green team getting a few penalties from the scrums and the gold team getting the better of the penalty count from Jaco Peyper.
The linouts seemed to have been a roulette table for both teams as they could not really get any structure from the set piece.
It was only Jantjies and Willemse boots that got the scoreboard turning over with no team really want to go for tries.
At the end it was one of the most boring first forty we have seen and at the break most was just wishing they would treat this game as a trail game and start running the ball which is what fans was expecting to see.
The Green team went into the break with a lead of 6-3.
The second half started better with both team showing a bit more on attack and it was a pull on the jersey from Willemse that earned him a yellow card and a penalty try which took the Green team to a 13-3 lead.
Bosch kicked a penalty to reduce the score to 13-6 before Kolis went over from a drive to extend the Green teams lead again.
A great drive from the Green team saw Kolisi going over for his try and a lead of 18-6 for his side.
The Gold team tried but their execution was not good enough to get continuity going and score points.
We then saw a kick bounces off Schickerling’s head and Augustus got the ball in hands to score another for the Green team. This took their score to 25-9.
That is how the game ended and a bit disappointing but one must understand this is the second game for these players.
Scorers:
Springbok Green: Tries – Penalty try, Siya Kolisi, Juarno Augustus. Conversions – Automatic conversion, Kade Wolhuter. Penalties – Elton Jantjies (2).
Springbok Gold: Penalties – Damian Willemse, Curwin Bosch.
