It will be a repeat of last year’s finalist as the Golden Lions will host Western Province at Emarites Airline Park after they came back a few times on Saturday to beat the Cheetahs 43-33 in there semi-final clash.
The game change lead a few times and the Lions supporters had to wait till the last 15 min to start relaxing as the Cheetahs came out to play on the day.
The match was played at a thrilling pace and tries were flowing from the start o fthe match.
The Lions had to dig deep to pull away from the young Cheetahs side and only after a yellow card and penalty try they were able to get away to an confrotable lead late in the second half. There was again some questionable decisions from the referee and one have to start asking if there is not a better way than this free for all yellow cards and penalties at scrum time.
That the contest was taken out of the game when Cheetahs prop was yellow carded by referee is not the problem, but that the lottery that has been going on at scrum time and then a yellow card that follows that, one need to ask if there is not a better way to keep the game a contest troughout.
The Cheetahs played there best game of the season and were showing what they have develop in since Smith took over as coach and they will get better.
The man of the match must be the Lions captain Jaco Kriel who again shown the rugby world how great a player he is.
Now the Lions are again in a Currie Cup Final and only 80 min between them and Province stand in the way of a brilliant season. If they go on and beat Province next week they would have done so unbeaten throughout the whole Currie Cup which wll be a great achievement.
Not too many people will bet against that but a final is a different game and anything can happen does not matter how good you were or actually are. As a team you need to pitch up and do it for one last time for 80 min.
The Lions will this time play Province at home and they will take a lot of experience from last year’s heartbreak at Newlands.
