Jake White is the new Director of Rugby at the Bulls and he is not everyone’s cup off tea but the bigger question is will he be able to put the Bulls back to their glory days when they won Super Rugby titles?
The man just turned 40 when he got the Springbok job in 2004 and he was the guy that turned Springbok rugby around after “Kamp Staaldraad”
Springbok rugby was at one off it’s low points in 2003 and with the new man in charge came a new era off not just the Springbok game but also some off the best players we saw pulling the Green and Gold jumper over their heads.
He came in as an inexperienced coach in 2004 but had a plan and stick to it even when SA Rugby tried to fire him in 2006 a mere 10 months away from the 2007 World Cup.
Before his Springbok gig he was part off SA Rugby system as a video analyst and technical advisor under Nick Mallett before guiding the SA U-21 side to a World Cup win in 2002.
He also had success in turning around the Brumbies, Sharks, Montpellier and Toyota Verblitz.
His CV speaks for itself and experience is not the issue when it comes to Jake White, it is his peoples skills.
Many players and administrators do not have great memories with White and although many can just be seen as some sour grapes he does have a way to rub people up the wrong way.
Now the question is, is that a bad thing? I do not think so, coaching at any level is not for everyone and not many succeed. You have to be hart arsh to make it and stamp your authority down.
There are those that do not like the old school coaching method but in some cases it is the only way to get things done and thsi is maybe just what the Bulls needs.
The Bulls have been on top winning Super Rugby titles in 2007, 2009 and 2010.It was a different era and different way the game was played but I just got the feeling that White has moved with the times and he will be able to get the things done building up this Bulls side.
With the Pandemic White have not been able to meet with his players and some tough days ahead for current coach Human and his current supporting staff as their future is unclear.
The fact remains Human has not been able to get the best out off his players and his selections so far in the Super Rugby competition was questionable.
His job is simple, bring the bulls back to a place that they can compete with the best and win trophies.
White is already busy to scout the world of rugby for players to fit his game and the union. He is specially looking at players that left the country to return to South Africa.
White is a clever coach and he will surround him with great assistance and players to get to the goal he set himself.
I expect great things from the Bulls
