With the departure of Springbok Franco Mostert it was not easy to find a replacement for the Lions.
The so-called enforcer has been an important aspect of the modern day game and the Lions believed that they at least got close to replacing Mostert with Stephan Lewies.
Lewies will join the Lions ahead of the 2019 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament from Kamaishi Sewaves in Japan.
Most supporters will know Lewies from his 7 years at the Sharks as a no-nonsense player.
Injuries has been a major concern but he is fit and ready to take on the new challenge with the Lions side.
Lewies was included in the SA A side two years back when they played the England Saxons in two matches.
The Lions will go into this years Super Rugby again as one of the favourites after loosing out again in the final last year against the Crusaders.
Beside Mostert the Lions also lost the services of Ruan Dreyer, Jacques van Rooyen, Jaco Kriel, Marco Jansen van Vuren and Rohan Janse van Rensburg
The Lions first match in this years Super Rugby is against the Jaguares.
