Match Report – Stormers hold on for the win in Kimberley


The DHL Stormers almost gave it away but were able to held on to take a 38-32 win in Kimberley on Tuesday.

The Stormers went out to a good lead halfway through the second half after leading 24-13 at the break but it was all Griquas in the last 15 minutes, almost taking the win.

Griquas had the first opportunity on attack but it was the Stormers with the first real opportunity running hard at the Griquas defence.

Wit the Stormers on attack they played the advantage and after a penalty close to the line it was Godlen Masimla with the quick take to score the first try.

Griquas wasted no time to respond with Arendse who ran the perfect line to score the home side first try of the match making it 7-all after 9 min.

Two penalties traded by the 10’s before the Stormers got their second try through Masimla again but their was a forward pass in the lead up which the TMO decided was fine.

This gave the Stormers a 17-10 lead before Whitehead kicked another penalty to reduce the lead again to 17-13. Just before halftime the Stormers went over again for their third try of the match.

Again the last pass looked forward but again the TMO decided that let it go and that gave the Stormers a 24-13 lead at the break.

It was the perfect start for the Stormers with Marcel Theunissen that pick up a loose ball after Masixole Banda kicked against his own player.

This gave the Stormers a 31-13 lead.

The next one from the Stormers came from their own half when quick hands found Njezula who broke the defence and found Wolhuter to go over.

That gave the Stormers a 38-13 lead.

Griquas got one back with Luus scoring their second try of the match from a maul.

Griquas put some huge pressure on the Stormers line and from a maul they ball went out wide to Daniel Kasende who got over in the corner.

This reduced the lead to 38-25 with 10 minutes to go. Griquas quickly followed that up with a brilliant try from De Beer when Griquas managed a turnover and got the ball to the speedster who showed brilliant feet and speed.

This made it very interesting with 6 minutes to go and the Stormers only leading 38-32.

Griquas had the opportunity at the end to take the win but a technical mistakes in the maul gave the Stormers the penalty to kick out and win the match.
