Match Report – Stormers steal it again in final minutes against Pumas

Two weeks in a row the DHL Stormers had to come back from behind to steal the win. It was one of the best first 40 minutes we have seen from the Pumas but they let the Stormers back in the game and was on the wrong side of the scoreboard at the end, 42-37.

It was four tries in the last 20 minutes that sealed it for the Stormers at the end.

The Pumas were first on the board with a penalty from Fouchè’. The Stormers hit back immediately with a try from Pretorius after Jantjies charged down a kick from Williams.

That gave the Stormers a 7-3 lead.

The Pumas was next to score when Augustus rips the ball away and offloads to Maritz who intercepts and get over for the home side first try.

The Pumas looked impressive on attack and execute their game plan brilliantly pushing the Stormers back with pin-point kicks. There next try came after a good lineout and a chip over the top taken by van der Bank and passes to Rudolph who gets over for their second try of the match.

With a lead of 17-7 the Stormers were looking down the barrel. Fouchè’ kicked a couple of penalty to extend their lead to 23-7 with halftime looming.

It was Jantjies try that gave the Stormers hope again after Pretorius got an offload to du Plessis who pass to Jantjies to get over for the try.

The lines the Pumas backs were running was simply brilliant and it was Rudolph that broke the line and send van der Bank over for another Pumas try.

The Stormers had chances late in the half but brilliant defence from the home side kept the Stormers out and the Pumas went into the break with a brilliant 30-14 lead.

It was the Pumas that scored first in the second half. They start an attack from a lineout with ball in hand it was Marais that straighten the line and with the ball going wide Maritz went over for another try.

It seemed at that stage that 37-14 will be just too much for the Stormers to come back from but as they showed it last week they did it again.

It was Fouché that got over for the Stormers after some sustain pressure in the Pumas half. This reduced the score to 37-21 with 17 minutes left in the game.

The Stormers slowly got back inside the Pumas twenty two and it was a maul with Springbok Mbonambi that used his strength to power over.

With only eight minutes to go the Pumas still led 37-28.

We then saw one of the better tries from the Stormers. After the restart the Stormers played wide which the Pumas turned over. They played with the ball and the Stormers turned the ball over again. Van der Merwe ran down the touchline and with some quick hands Zas went over.

This made it 37-35 for the Pumas with 5 minutes to go.

The Stormers were wishing for some magic and they got it through Gelant who showed his magic step and scored the winning try which Swiel converted.

One must feel for the Pumas who played brilliantly and lost it at the end but that is how the game goes sometimes.

Get out of jail again for the Stormers but they will take two wins from two matches.

Next week it is the Bulls and it will be a long day at the office if they do not improve. One
