Mitre 10 Cup Final
Tasman have defended their Mitre 10 Cup title successfully on Saturday when they beat Auckland in a thrilling final 13-12.
Havili was one of the standout players for Tasman as he slotted a 70th minute penalty to take the lead and then also win a crucial turnover at the depth that sealed the win for them.
It was good to see the handling and effort going into the match and it was one of those edge of your seats stuff throughout the 80 minutes.
Poor discipline was Auckland’s downfall as they got two yellow cards which proved very costly at the end.
Auckland had a few chances at the end as well with Hickey missing a drop goal with three minutes to go.
Tasman with this win become only the second team in Mitre 10 Cup history to win successive finals.
Credit must go to Auckland who defended brilliantly with one man down but that was off their own making and should not have been in that position.
Auckland 12 : Harry Plummer 3 pens, Zarn Sullivan pen
Tasman 13 :Quentin MacDonald try, David Havili con, 2 pens

Mitre 10 Championship Final
Hawke’s Bay was crowned the champions of the Cup Championship on Friday after beating Northland 36-24 in the final.
In the past three years they came from semifinalists in 2018, to beaten finalists in 2019, to winning it in 2020. It was not as easy as the final score would suggest with Northland made them work hard for the title.
Northland was first on the board and after 30 minutes was leading 17-12 but at the end Hawke’s Bay showed their class coming back in the game first with a try by Visinia and then in the second half with Jonah Lowe going over.
Then Folau Fakatava made a break and lost the covering Scott Gregory with a big step, teeing up Neria Fomai to score once more with his ninth try assist of the season, the most in the competition.
Led by their inspirational skipper Ash Dixon and Fakatava, the home side forced Northland into mistakes as the game wore on and were unlucky that two tries were disallowed.
In the end, the floodgates eventually opened for Hawke’s Bay, who bagged two more tries to open up a 19-point buffer with 20 minutes to go, and despite a consolation try with five minutes remaining, Northland didn’t come close.
Hawke’s Bay 36 Jonah Lowe 2, Neria Fomai 2, Lolagi Visinia, Ash Dixon tries; Lincoln McClutchie 2 cons, Caleb Makene con
Northland 24 Luatangi Li, Will Grant, Tom Robinson, Tamati Tua tries; Dan Hawkins con, Johnny Cooper con
