It is with great sadness we learned today, that Org Potgieter, fondly known as Boertjie to many, passed away on the 11th of September.
Org was one of the founding members of this community back in 2005 and became a dear friend to many. Back then, when a bunch of opinionated rugby supporters were trying to figure out how to put together a blog post (and let’s be honest, we didn’t have a bloody clue how to do it), Org provided every single one of us a lot of guidance and shared his wisdom as a seasoned rugby journalist.
The default appointed editor of RuggaWorld (because he didn’t really have a choice in the matter), was and will forever remain the foundation around which this community was built.
Far from just being a place where passionate rugby supporters could share and debate views around the game we all love, this platform has also allowed me, and many others to form life-long friendships with many folks and their families, and it was no different with Org.
Having shared a couple of beers with him personally in the past, Org was one of those very few individuals in life whose online personality matched his real-life demeanour to the tee! He was as grumpy in real life as he was online! 😊
Never short of a story from his journalism days when he toured and wrote about the Springboks and other teams, this grumpy old man had the softest of hearts whose passion for the game we all love ran very deep.
Thank you for guiding a bunch of clueless rugby supporters to show some journalistic integrity which allowed this platform to be respected and loved by many over the years. You have left a gaping hole in our community which we will never be able to fill.
To his family and close personal friends, much strength to you during this difficult time, and if by some chance you do get to read this, know that Org had a significant impact on all our lives here at RuggaWorld.
Slaap sag, Boetjie. Ons gaan jou mis.
