Rugby World Cup – Aussies struggle for bonus point win over Georgia

Australia got the bonus point win over Georgia on Friday but it was surely not the way Cheika wanted to go into the playoffs.

They looked poor on attack and could not hold on to the ball most of the match. Although Georgia played well Australia should have put them away.

At the end they beat them 27-8 and job done as good as they could in the pool stages, now for England in Quarter Finals.

On a wet field it was never going to be pretty as Australia and Georgia played their final pool match on Friday.

There was huge hits coming in from both sides in the early exchanges of the match.

Australia put huge pressure on Georgia but some desperate defence kept them out till the 23 minute of the game when Nick White went over.

This gave the Aussies a 7-0 lead in the match.

Georgia answered back with a penalty that Soso Matiashvili kicked over to put their first points on the board.

Australia had more of the ball and although they had plenty of opportunities they just could not get over the Georgian defence.

Australia was given another blow with the yellow card for si Naisarani after it was judges he hit the player in the head with a charge in the ruck.

Australia was again extending their lead with a penalty by Matt Toomua which extend their lead to 10-3. No more points came in the second half with Australia leading at the break.

The second half saw both teams trying to run the ball and get over the advantage line but either some good defence from both sides or knock-ons stopped them from scoring any points.

It was finally a magic run from Marika Koroibete that puts first points in second half to stretch Australia lead to 17-3 after 60 minutes.

It was Georgia that scored next with a great breakout in their own half with Alexander Todua finishing it all off for their first try of the match.

This reduce the lead to 17-8 with 8 minute to go.

Australia ended the match with two tries when Dempsey and Genia got over to make it seems a comfortable win but it was not even close to a comfortable win.

Georgia played well but at the end the Aussies were very poor in this match and surely not the preparations that Cheika wanted for his team going into a possible England Quarter Final match.
