Rugby World Cup – Tonga end tournament with win over USA


Tonga was too strong for the USA in their last pool match of this year World Cup on Sunday beating them 31-19.

Tonga put the pressure on the USA from the start of the match and kept the USA pinned down in their own twenty two.

USA did not had much ball in the first 18 minutes and had to make most of the tackling in the match.

It was Tonga that scored first with a great try after again breaking through the USA backline. It was Siegfried Fisi”ihoi the man over the line using his power to give his team the first points of the match.

USA hit back immediately with some good backline play to send Mike Te”o over. This put the USA on the board and it took not long for the big man to go over again which gave USA the lead of 12-7 after 28 minutes.

There was no more points in the first half as defence on both sides were good.

The second half was a close affair and it was Tonga who got the first points with a penalty from Sonatane Takulua to make it a two point game.

Tonga manage to put his some huge hits with the USA on attack in their half and turned the ball over which was kicked down field for Malietoa Hingano to score Tonga second try.

This gave Tonga a 17-12 lead against the run of play and it took not long for them to get over again with Siale Piutau scoring his try in his final test for his country.

With 3 minutes to go the USA got over or rather against the upright to pull the lead back to 24-19 when Tony Lamborn score his try.

Tonga had the stronger finish as Telusa Veainu scored after the hooter from little kick through to end the game with a bonus point for Tonga.

The captain, Siale Piutau, in his last test kicked the conversion to make the final score 31-19.
