Franco Smith, the new Italian coach has named his first group of players from which he will trim down for the Six Nations starting next month.

He has made a bolt move in excluding Italian legend Sergio Parisse and included Alberto Sqarbi who is back in the mix after six years.

Smith also named three newcomers in his extended squad.

Although Parrisse is not in the squad he is still expected to play his farewell match either against Scotland or England in the Stadio Olipico.

Parisse, 36, had planned to retire after the Rugby World Cup but was denied a farewell appearance when Italy’s final pool match against New Zealand was cancelled due to Typhoon Hagibis.
