Super Rugby Aotearoa – Blues come away with bonus point win against Hurricanes


The Blues got off to a great start to the new season getting a bonus point win over the Hurricanes on Saturday in Wellington. The game started well but as with the Friday match, one could see that it was the first game fo the season with plenty of mistakes by both sides.

The Hurricanes started well but it was the Blues that got the first try of the match off a mistake from the Hurricanes.

The home side made a complete mess off it inside their own 22 with a pass from Fladers getting picked up by Papalii to stroll over.

The Hurricanes hit back immediately with their first try but they had to wait for the TMO to give is stamp of approval. Asafo Aumua showed great strength getting over.

This reduced the Blues lead to only 2 points. Both teams. The Hurricanes had a few good runs but defence was up to it early on.

No team really took control of the match early on with a few high kicks coming in trying to unsettle the opposition.

The Blues was camping in the Hurricanes twenty two and after a few penalties the referee gave a yellow card to Hurricanes Blackwell for repeated infringements after he warned them.

Some great defence from the Hurricanes saw them getting out of the danger zone as the Blues kept going for a scrum and not taking the points.

The Hurricanes got two opportunities to kick at the poles and Barrett smashed both penalties over to give the home side a 11-7 lead at the break.

The home side put on the pressure early in the second half but with every opportunity handling let them down a little bit but it was the Blues that draw first blood with a great try by Clarke.

Great build up from the Blues getting into the Hurricanes twenty two it was a perfect kick by Black which gave Clarke the easiest pick and score.

This gave the Blues the lead of 14-11 after 50 minutes into the game.

With the Blues again on attack the Hurricanes got another yellow card when Du Plessis Kirifi was send off for cynical offence. With one man down the Hurricanes could not defend their line which saw Perofeta going over.

The Hurricanes build up nicely and had a few bites at it before Asafo Aumua powered over for his second try of the match and reduced the lead to 21-16.

Black extended the lead for the visitors with a penalty before Rieki Ioane showed his speed running in the last try of the match to secure the win and bonus point for the Blues.
