Super Rugby Unlocked – Stormers comeback to beat Lions at Newlands

The Stormers had to fight back in the second half to beat the Lions at Newlands on Saturday in a game that did not lived up to expectations.

Kolisi and his coach were not happy afterwards with the way they started their campaign.

Kolisi told the media that if he had to play the way he played on the day at international level he would not have survived.

Dobson said that his changeroom felt like a team that loss and it was just not good enough. At one stage the Stormers with all their experience players looked like a Bulle’tjie rugby side starting to learn the game.

There was something to take from the game with the way the Stormers fought back in that second half.

Willemse again looked poor at ten and could not control the game nor could he get his kicking game going. The Stormers backline looked poor at best with no plan or direction in that first half.

The Lions started the game well and looked good in attack and should have been much further ahead at halftime but lost opportunities and poor handling let them down.

Elton Jantjies was again the best player in the Lions side and his control with both his distribution and the boot was great to see.

He setup Sibahle Maxwane for a brilliant counter-attacking try. Burger Odendaal was brilliant for the Lions and made his presence felt in the midfield.

The Lions did look at one stage that they might get back in the game. It was then that Rikus Pretorius made a great read in teh Lions attack to intercept and ran 40 meters for the Stormers first try of the match.

This seemed to be the Stormers turnaround point in the game and gave us their best period in the match with Du Plessis going over for their second not long after to extend their lead to 13 points.

It was Burger Odendaal who was full value again in the try by Jantjies when he had a wonderful run and sidestepped Willemse to send Jantjies over.

Lions put the pressure on the Stormers but their defence were strong enough to keep them out and take the win in their first game.
